Latvian Bus Cancellations Trigger Protest Over Funding Shortfalls

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 16, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Regional Bus Carriers Protest, Cancelling 53 Flights

On an unspecified date, regional bus carriers in latvia protested, resulting in the cancellation of 53 scheduled routes. These⁢ cancellations⁤ included services such as aldus-Liepaja (10:30), Dārziņi CSDD-Stadions (10:40), Ozoli-Vecbebri-koknese-Aizkraukle (10:40), Liepaja (Siena Market)-Pavilosta ‌(10:40), Priekule-Unit (10:45), adn Aizkraukle Station-Aizkraukle Station-Aizkraukle Bus⁣ Station (10:45).

The protest stems from a dispute ⁣over compensation for increased costs. Carriers⁣ are seeking compensation for losses amounting to 10% of ⁢their earnings due‍ to long-term contracts signed⁢ during ‍a period of exceptional circumstances (July 1, 2022 – August‌ 31,⁣ 2025). They ‍argue a 10% increase in contract prices is the minimum needed to mitigate losses and maintain service. Without⁢ additional funding, carriers fear insolvency and disruption to passenger transport.

The ATD (a directorate ⁤overseeing ‌regional public transport) does⁤ not support the‍ carriers’ protest, stating passengers should not suffer consequently. ATD is applying penalties for unfulfilled routes as⁤ outlined in contracts and ‍will ⁤withhold state compensation for⁢ those cancelled services. They are advising ⁣passengers to consider choice transportation options, such as trains, where available.

However, ATD ‍notes that not all carriers ⁢are participating in the protest. Services ‌provided by AS “CATA” and “Latvijas Public Bus” Ltd. in areas ⁣of Pieriga, saldus, Kuldīga, Cēsis, Sigulda, and Limbaži are continuing.

The carriers initially appealed to the government ⁣for compensation for increased, unforeseen costs on August⁢ 12th at ⁢the Cabinet of Ministers. The Public Transport Council, on September 4th, determined the subsidized bus route network is planned for ‍56.145 ⁣million kilometers in the coming year – a reduction of ‌16% (11.06 million kilometers) from previous forecasts for 2025. this reduction will involve‌ cutting flights and portions of flights deemed unprofitable or wiht low passenger numbers.

Passengers are legally⁤ entitled to seek direct compensation from carriers ‍for losses incurred due to delays or⁣ cancellations, provided they have purchased a ticket for the affected route.

Title: US Stock Market Rises Amidst Employment Data and Inflation Concerns

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 10, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Stock Markets Rise Amid ‍Labor Market Data, Inflation Watch

Equity prices on US and European stock exchanges‍ largely increased Tuesday, as investors assessed recent US employment data and anticipated upcoming inflation figures.

The ⁤US labor Department revised data to estimate 911,000 fewer jobs created‌ over the 12 months ending in March. This suggests a weaker US labor market than ⁤previously understood, increasing ⁣expectations that the Federal⁤ Reserve (FRS) ⁣may lower interest rates. Investors are now focused on Thursday’s release of consumer inflation data, ⁣as persistently high inflation could ⁣deter the FRS from easing monetary policy.

Wall ‍Street⁣ achieved new records, with the‌ Dow‌ Jones Industrial Average rising 0.4% ‌to 45,711.34 points, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index gaining 0.3% to 6512.61 points, and the Nasdaq Composite increasing by 0.4% to 21,879.49 points.

European markets also saw ‍gains. The london Stock Exchange’s FTSE ⁤100 rose 0.2% to⁤ 9242.53 ⁤points, and the ‍Paris Stock Exchange’s CAC 40 increased by 0.2% to 7749.39 points. However, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange’s ⁣DAX fell 0.4% to 23,718.45⁣ points.

Oil prices increased amid concerns about potential conflict expansion in the Middle ‌East, with⁢ WTI crude oil rising 0.6% to $62.63 a barrel in New ⁢York and Brent crude ⁢oil rising 0.6% to $66.39 a barrel⁢ in London. Gold prices continued to climb, reaching a high above $2,368 per ounce.

The Netherlands Stock Exchange’s title‌ Transfer Facility (TTF) decreased 0.4% to 32.93 euros⁣ per megawatt-hour.Currency markets saw the ⁢euro fall from $1.1763 to $1.1707, the ‍British ⁣pound decline from $1.3545 to $1.3527, and the⁤ US dollar weaken against ‍the Japanese yen, moving from 147.50 to 147.42 per dollar. The euro’s value against the British pound also decreased, falling from 86.84 to 86.57 ⁢pennies.

written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Indexo Group Projects Strong growth Following Potential Delfingroup Acquisition

Indexo⁤ Financial Services, encompassing IPAS Indexo (Pension Administration), AS indexo open Pension Fund, and AS‍ Indexo Bank, is preparing a‌ voluntary share ‍offer‍ to the shareholders of⁣ AS Delfingroup. The group has released‌ a financial forecast outlining anticipated performance should the acquisition – targeting 65% ownership ⁢of⁣ Delfingroup – be⁣ successfully completed.

The forecast projects significant growth for ‌the‌ combined entity, which would integrate banks, pension management, and consumer lending services. Indexo anticipates exceeding EUR 30 million in profit by 2028, driven by a gradual reduction in external ⁢funding costs. Revenue⁢ is ‍projected to reach EUR 94.9‍ million, with a net‍ profit‌ of EUR⁣ 33 million in the same year.

These projections are⁤ based ⁤on ⁤individual growth forecasts for each company within the Indexo ‌Group. Importantly, the forecast does‍ not currently⁤ include potential synergies resulting from the integration, meaning actual financial⁢ benefits⁣ could be even greater. ⁢Further potential for growth exists within Indexo Bank through expansion into new customer segments‍ and ⁣service offerings.

According to henrik Karmo, Chairman of the Board of IPAS Indexo and a ‍founder of Indexo, the combination with Delfingroup ⁢will create a stronger financial ⁢force ⁣in Latvia. He highlights benefits including reduced funding⁣ costs and cross-selling opportunities ⁤between⁣ group companies. The combined group would serve hundreds ⁣of thousands of customers, manage a loan portfolio exceeding EUR‍ 700‌ million, and hold over EUR 2 billion in assets.

Karmo encourages Delfingroup shareholders to consider the offer and participate‍ in the potential benefits⁢ of the newly formed‌ group.

A summary of the Indexo Group’s financial forecast for the coming years ‍is available‍ here.

It⁢ is indeed vital⁤ to note that this forecast is based on current assumptions and is subject to change based on market conditions⁣ and strategic adjustments. actual performance‍ may differ from⁤ these projections.

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 4, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Latvia‘s Electric Car Support Program a Success, with Plans for Future Initiatives

Latvia’s program to encourage the purchase of environmentally‌ kind vehicles (ECII), launched in‍ 2022, ‍has proven successful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To date, ⁢ 6,426 residents have utilized the program ⁢to purchase electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Funded by EUR 30 ‍million ‍from emission quota auctions (increased threefold from the initial budget), the ECII ⁣program has⁤ supported⁢ approximately 40%‍ of all electric car registrations in Latvia. A notable portion – 28%, ⁢or 1,200 vehicles ⁣- were purchased by ⁣large families and individuals with disabilities.

The purchases break down as follows: 37% ⁣were new electric cars, 37% were used electric ⁣cars, and 26% were plug-in⁤ hybrid vehicles. Popular ⁤models include ‌the Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf, and Volkswagen Tayron.

Currently, the Environmental Investment Fund (VIF) is processing final reports from vehicle sellers.⁢ Any unused funding resulting from cancelled purchases or rejected applications will be offered to other eligible residents. Aid amounts ranged⁢ from EUR 3,350 to EUR 9,000 depending on vehicle type and‌ eligibility for the⁤ Latvian Honor Family certificate.

Looking ahead, the Climate ⁣and Energy Ministry (KEM) is developing ‌a ‍new support program, aiming for‌ implementation in 2026, potentially through the⁣ Social Climate Fund. This‌ new initiative will re-evaluate support conditions based on market changes, financial sustainability, and ⁤carbon emission ‍reduction efficiency.KEM emphasizes the importance of continued incentives, like grants and discounts, to‌ further promote electromobility in‍ Latvia, collaborating with industry stakeholders⁢ to ensure the program’s effectiveness and alignment with sustainable mobility goals.

EC President’s Plane Targeted: Russian GPS Interference Incident

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 1, 2025

GPS Interference Targeted Plane Carrying ⁢EU Commission President von‍ der‌ Leyen During Bulgaria Visit

Plovdiv, Bulgaria – The aircraft transporting European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der leyen experienced significant GPS ⁢disruption while approaching Plovdiv ‍Airport ‍on Sunday, ⁤prompting⁢ the pilot to rely on manual ‍controls and paper ‍maps for landing. The incident is being investigated as a deliberate act of interference, with three informed officials confirming to the Financial Times that it is considered a ⁤Russian intervention operation.

According to‌ sources, GPS signals⁢ were unavailable throughout the vicinity of Plovdiv Airport. The pilot ‌was forced ‍to circle the‌ airport for approximately one ⁤hour before successfully ‌landing the plane⁢ using traditional navigational methods. “It was an indisputable intervention,” one⁣ official stated.

The Bulgarian Air Traffic Dispatch Service confirmed the occurrence of the⁢ disruption to the Financial Times, ‌noting a pattern of increasing interference. “As February 2022, we have seriously observed [GPS] damping cases, but lately, signal counterfeiting,” a statement⁣ from the service read.

An EC spokesperson ⁤acknowledged the potential threat, stating, “We are well aware that threats and intimidation ⁢are⁤ part of the ordinary Russian hostile action. This will further strengthen our unshakable commitment to increase our defense capabilities and support Ukraine.”

President von der Leyen had travelled from Warsaw to plovdiv to⁤ meet with Bulgarian ⁣Prime Minister Rosen Gelyazkov ‍and tour an ammunition⁤ plant. ⁢She departed Plovdiv on the ⁣same aircraft following the visit.

The‌ incident raises concerns about‌ the vulnerability of civilian air travel to deliberate‍ GPS interference⁤ and highlights escalating tensions in the region.

Latvian Family Offices: Investment Trends & Key PlayersFamily Office investments”>

The investment strategies of high-net-worth families wield meaningful influence in the global investment landscape. Currently,Latvia is experiencing a notable surge ⁢in Family Office investments, attracting attention from consultants ⁢specializing in serving wealthy families and fostering the emergence of ⁤prominent Latvian entrepreneurs as investment leaders.

Various methods ‍exist for private investment control, but the Family ⁤Office⁢ model ‍- or Latvian family investment company – stands out for its commitment ‍to ⁤transparency and public accountability. While many⁣ families opt for consultant firms that maintain client confidentiality, the⁢ formation of dedicated companies for family investment management is increasingly common. Dienas‌ Bizness recently identified two such entities in Latvia: SIA Monday and AS Alppes Capital. This article delves ‌deeper into ⁣AS⁤ Alppes Capital to understand the preferences of Latvia’s leading investors.

What is a Family Office?

At its core, a Family Office is a private investment⁤ company⁢ designed ‍to grow and preserve a wealthy family’s capital across generations. Typically, these offices are ⁢managed by experienced investment professionals, rather than⁢ family members ‌themselves. ⁢an ⁣exception exists with first-generation family investment companies, frequently enough founded by self-made entrepreneurs seeking⁢ to ensure continued prosperity⁤ for their descendants. however, ‌even in these cases, ⁣professional managers are frequently brought in.

The selection⁢ of ⁤self-reliant leadership is crucial⁣ to⁤ mitigate conflicts of interest and emotional investment decisions. A professional manager‍ provides neutrality, identifies potential risks, ‌and fosters a⁣ disciplined approach to investment – qualities that might be compromised by family ‍involvement.

Single vs. Multi-Family Office

Family Offices fall into two⁤ primary categories: Single-Family ⁣office‍ and Multi-Family Office. A Single-Family Office serves a single family, providing highly personalized investment management services. A ‍ Multi-Family Office, conversely, caters ⁢to ‌multiple families, offering professional, active management on‍ a⁤ broader scale. The choice between the two depends on the⁤ family’s wealth, ⁣complexity of needs, and desire for bespoke services.

Why Latvia?

Latvia’s ‍growing appeal as a ⁢Family Office ⁤destination stems ⁤from a confluence of factors. These include a ‍stable ⁤political and⁤ economic environment, a skilled workforce,⁤ and a ‌strategic location within the European Union. The country’s commitment to transparency and regulatory compliance also plays ⁢a key role, attracting families seeking a secure and reputable ⁣jurisdiction for their investments. Moreover, Latvia offers ‌a competitive cost structure compared to⁤ more established financial centers.

Looking Ahead: trends in Family Office Investment

The Family Office landscape is constantly evolving. Current trends indicate a growing focus on alternative investments, such as private equity, venture capital, ⁤and real estate. Sustainability and⁤ ESG (Environmental, Social,⁣ and Governance) factors are also becoming increasingly important considerations for‍ Family Office investors. We anticipate continued growth in⁣ the Latvian Family Office sector as more families recognize the benefits of this sophisticated investment ‌approach.
