Melbourne, Australia – July 28, 2023 – Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird have released their fourth studio album, ‘Rosewater Crocodile,’ today, July 28th, via Double Drummer Records. The album is already garnering attention for its sophisticated blend of 80s influences and contemporary indie sensibilities.
hailing from Melbourne/Naarm, the five-piece band – consisting of Lachlan Rose (vocals, guitar), Darcy Maxwell (lead guitar), Daniel “Daz” Muller (bass), Joe Snow (saxophone, keys) and James Muller (drums) – have crafted an album that moves beyond simple retro homage. ‘Rosewater Crocodile’ distinguishes itself by eschewing the typical excesses of the 80s, instead focusing on a refined fusion of soft rock and sophisti-pop.
The album promptly establishes an inviting atmosphere, characterized by the interplay of brass, flute, and piano arrangements surrounding Lachlan Rose’s distinctive vocals and lyrical style. The track “Mercury Rising” is highlighted as a notably strong example, drawing comparisons to a more polished iteration of Talking Heads‘ signature sound.
Standout tracks “Freak of Nature” and “Flee The Cage” showcase the band’s evolving songwriting prowess, featuring soaring synths and saxophone melodies. Critics have noted the emotive quality of these songs, suggesting they would be well-suited for use in television soundtracks, specifically referencing the acclaimed FX series ‘The bear,’ whose season 2 soundtrack has become a cultural touchstone.
‘Rosewater Crocodile’ represents a meaningful step forward for Cousin tony’s Brand New Firebird, demonstrating a heightened ability to incorporate intricate details into their compositions. The album is expected to appeal to both existing fans and attract a wider audience, building on the success of ‘Smiles of Earth,’ which was featured as Double J’s Feature Album in 2022.
