US Flights Canceled as โคGovernment Shutdown โImpacts Air Traffic Control
WASHINGTON – Ten percent โof flights at the 40 busiest airports โฃacross the Unitedโ States โฃwill be canceledโ beginning Friday, November 7,โ 2025, due to the ongoing federal โคgovernment shutdown. The โcancellations stem from โthe inability of the US government to pay โฃthe salaries โof air traffic controllers, creatingโ critically โคimportant disruptionโ ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
The planned flight capacities โคwill be “cutโฃ by ten percent at 40 airports in theโข country,” Transport โคMinister Sean Duffy announcedโค to journalists. These are the “40 busiest” airports nationwide, according to the head ofโข the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). the measure aims โto alleviate โpressure on air traffic controllers directly affected by โคthe โคbudget impasse.
Minister Duffy previously warned on Tuesday ofโค potential airspace closures as โฃnumerous controllers considered โcalling out sick due to unpaid wages.this could trigger widespreadโ airportโข chaos, notably with Thanksgiving on November 27thโ approaching – a peak travel period for USโ families.โ Airports like Houston, Texas, haveโ already experienced hours-long delays andโฃ cancellations โฃin recent weeks.
Over 60,000 air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees are currently working without pay. The White House cautionedโค that increased absenteeism could overwhelm โcheck-in procedures.
A โฃsimilar situationโค contributed โขto the end of the 2019 government shutdown, when widespreadโข employeeโฃ sick-outs caused substantial โคdelays.
The current shutdown began October 1st, 2025, as Republicans and Democrats in the Senateโค remain deadlocked over an interim โbudget agreement. Democrats are advocating for increasedโ fundingโ for social programs, particularly those โคsupporting individuals at risk โof losing health insurance coverage.
This shutdown is now theโ longest in US history, โwith escalating consequences. Approximatelyโ 42 million Americans reliant on food assistance programs have beenโข without benefits as the weekend. In total, around 1.4 million federal employees are eitherโข on furlough or working without pay.
