Stuart acquired the cinema โฃin 2018, โinheriting a venue โขwith a rich history but facing notable challenges. Recognizing a void in โrepresentation both on and off-screen, she intentionally curated a program thatโ spotlights films by and about people of color, particularly Afro-Latinos. “I wanted to create โa space where myโ community coudl see themselves reflected in the stories being told,” Stuart โคexplained in a recent interview. โ”It’s about reclaiming our narratives andโ celebrating โคourโข culture.”
The cinemaโ quickly became โคa cornerstone of theโฃ Flatbush community, hosting film screenings, live music, art exhibitions, and community events. Though, the COVID-19 pandemic forcedโ aโ temporary closure, threatening the โขcinema’s future. Undeterred, Stuart launched a crowdfundingโ campaign that garnered widespread support, demonstrating theโ deep connection between theโฃ cinema and its patrons.
“The outpouring of support was astonishing,” Stuart said. “It reaffirmed that โขStuart Cinema โฃ& Cafe is more than just a business; it’s โaโ vital part ofโข the community’s fabric.” โ
