A portion of a public housing building collapsed in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx Tuesday,prompting a search and rescue operation. As of now, no injuries have been reported.
The collapse affected a corner of the building,with a wall partially detaching,according to video footage from CNN affiliate WABC. Search and rescue teams are currently on the roof of the structure, navigating brickwork as they assess the damage. New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated he is closely monitoring the situation, and urged the public to avoid the area to ensure their safety and allow emergency services to work.
“New York, I have received details about the emergency that is taking place in the Mott Haven area, in the Bronx,” Adams posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We are receiving a complete evaluation of emergency services and we will continue to provide updates. Please avoid the area for their safety.”
One witness described a sudden and violent collapse, stating, “Before I transferred, the whole building simply… a strong rumble was heard, and something exploded. And it collapsed without further ado.”
