Canberra Airport: New Fiji Link & Growing Global Aviation Reach for 2026

written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Canberra Airport has significantly expanded its international reach, establishing a crucial link to Fiji and, through that, to key global hubs including San Francisco, Vancouver, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, according to announcements made February 25, 2026.

The new route to Nadi, Fiji, operated by Fiji Airways, serves as a pivotal connection point, allowing Canberra to participate in long-haul global travel without the need for direct, wide-body aircraft operations from its airport. This development marks a strategic advancement for the Australian capital, enhancing connectivity for both residents and visitors.

Alongside this international expansion, Canberra Airport is strengthening its domestic network. A new Link Airways service connecting Canberra to Launceston, Tasmania, is scheduled to commence on May 6, 2026, offering four return services per week. Jetstar upgraded its Brisbane service in January 2026, introducing A320 aircraft and increasing capacity by up to 52 seats per flight. Virgin Australia launched direct flights to Bali, Indonesia, in April 2026, with three return flights per week initially, with potential for increased frequency during peak seasons.

The Canberra-Nadi route is not merely a point-to-point connection. it’s a strategic bridge. Nadi acts as a trans-Pacific hub, facilitating access to destinations like Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Singapore, and Tokyo. This structure allows Canberra to participate in long-haul global flows without basing wide-body aircraft locally.

According to Canberra Airport’s 2025 operational summary, international capacity via Nadi restored full pre-pandemic levels and grew by approximately 8% year-over-year. This growth is expected to create North American trade corridors, facilitate academic and diplomatic exchange, and increase tourism inflows into the Australian Capital Territory.

The connection to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), one of the largest hubs in the United States, provides Canberra access to the southern and central United States, as well as government and defense links. DFW provides connectivity to over 250 North American destinations, strengthening Canberra’s diplomatic ties with Washington and central U.S. Markets.

Access to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which processed more than 75 million passengers in 2025, integrates Canberra into a major aviation corridor. LAX serves as a primary gateway to the Pacific Rim, with nonstop connectivity to Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America. The Los Angeles link enhances diplomatic movement, strengthens trade pathways, and increases inbound U.S. Tourism potential.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO), handling approximately 52 million passengers in 2025, provides Canberra access to the global technology capital of Silicon Valley. This positions the Australian capital within the broader Pacific innovation ecosystem, strengthening bilateral collaboration in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital governance.

Vancouver International Airport, welcoming approximately 26 million passengers in 2025, strengthens Australia–Canada mobility in tourism, education, and migration. It also provides onward connectivity to Toronto, Calgary, and Montreal.

Singapore Changi Airport, processing approximately 68 million passengers in 2025, provides Canberra access to Southeast Asia’s most vital logistics and finance center. Singapore functions as a transfer hub to Europe, India, and Southeast Asia.

Hong Kong International Airport, handling more than 63 million passengers in 2025, acts as a financial and commercial bridge to mainland China and Northeast Asia, facilitating trade and legal exchanges.

Narita International Airport in Tokyo, processing approximately 35 million passengers in 2025, supports governmental engagement and tourism between Australia and Japan, and provides onward connectivity to Seoul and Taipei.

Domestic services from Canberra also connect the capital to major Australian cities. Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Link Airways operate flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin, Cairns, Gold Coast, and other destinations. Sydney recorded approximately 3.9 million international visitors in 2025, Melbourne 2.4 million, Brisbane 1.6 million, Perth 1.15 million, and Darwin 420,000.
