Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Struggles in L1 and Worrying Signals for Marseille

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 4, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

It’s a funny paradox that doesn’t amuse many people on the Canebière. Since the start of the season, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been as formidable on the European scene as he is ineffective in L1. The star recruit from Olympique de Marseille scored four goals in three matches in Europe, between his two goals in the C1 play-offs against Panathinaikos on the return leg, and his double in the Europa League for the first day against Ajax Amsterdam (3-3). But the problem is that he desperately cannot reproduce this in the French championship.

Since his signing with great fanfare in July, PEA has remained tirelessly silent in L1. A native of Laval, the Gabonese does not have the excuse of adaptation, he who knows the L1 well having launched his career there under the colors of Lille, then Monaco and Saint-Etienne after a stint in Dijon in L2. But he is unable to break through: seven matches, six starts and still not the slightest goal to score for a Marseille team which badly needs to see its center forward score goals.

Worrying signals in L1

The impression he leaves is even without appeal. At 34, the man who has demonstrated his finishing qualities at the highest level both at Dortmund (141 goals in 213 matches between 2013 and 2018) and at Arsenal (92 goals in 163 matches between 2018 and 2021) is not at the top of his form. Although he repeats that he still had the “speed record with Chelsea last season”, he is not as sharp on the pitch as in the past. And if he does not manage to take the depth as before while he is often lonely in front, he also shows a desperate clumsiness in front of the opposing goal while being imprecise in his ball handling.

So of course, not everything has to be thrown away. The Marseille striker has already delivered two assists this season in L1. He also has his goals in Europe which suggest that he just needs a breakthrough in L1 to launch his season in France. But doubts are still accumulating about the situation of the Gabonese who has signed up with Olympique de Marseille for three years. Because for the moment, his performances only remind us of the void left by the Chilean Alexis Sanchez, who conquered Marseille for his efficiency last season and his exemplary attitude on the pitch.

He still has a lot to give us

All this necessarily raises questions about the condition of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. It should be remembered that he only played 120 minutes at Chelsea between last February and June. And at his age, this lack of rhythm is not necessarily easy to make up for. “I spoke with Aubameyang. I told him that his 34 years did not matter. We see that he still has peaks at 35/36km/h, replied his new coach Gennaro Gattuso on Wednesday. scored in the Europa League, I see in training that he wants to give everything. He still has a lot to give us.”

Faced with this crossing of the desert, Aubameyang indeed seems to have the right attitude. On a personal level already by continuing to work. “Obviously there is a little frustration. Afterwards, I think that with my experience, I know that when the first one arrives, it will come together. So I don’t lose patience, I continue the work and I don’t give up nothing,” he said after the setback against Monaco on Friday at the Phocéen.

And if he is slow to justify the expectations logically linked to his status and his past as a serial scorer, the former Barcelona player also seems invested in the locker room where he must lead the way. “Aubameyang brings me a lot. He’s an idol because I watched him when I was young. When we do shooting sessions together, he advises me a lot,” Iliman Ndiaye admitted on Wednesday. Enough to say that OM was not completely wrong about his profile. Even if the Marseille club of course expects a lot more, particularly in front of the French goals.

Chelsea Progresses to Last 16 in English League Cup with Victory over Brighton

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

London –

Chelsea stepped into the last 16 English League Cup this season after beating Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 in the third round. Even though they only controlled less than 40 percent of the ball, the Blues managed to emerge victorious.

Playing at Stamford Bridge, Thursday (28/9/2023) early morning WIB, Mykhailo Mudyk almost gave the hosts a quick lead in the 3rd minute, but his long-range shot was saved by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Chelsea made a similar attempt again in the 30th minute, this time through Cole Palmer. However, Verbruggen was again successful in saving the goal.

Brighton threatened back in the 33rd minute. Ansu Fati got a chance in the penalty box with a shot with his right foot, but the direction of the ball was predictable by Robert Sanchez who then blocked it. A goalless draw closed the first half.

In the second half, Chelsea managed to take the lead in the 50th minute. The collaboration between Moises Caicedo, Ian Maatsen and Cole Palmer resulted in a through pass to Nicolas Jackson in the penalty box who then fired a low shot into the left corner of Brighton’s goal.

Jackson almost added his goal in the 62nd minute, but this time his shot was saved by Verbruggen. Meanwhile, Brighton appeared to control the ball up to 60 percent but had difficulty getting shots on goal.

Their only shot on goal came in the 74th minute through Solly March’s header, but it was saved by Robert Sanchez. The 1-0 score for Chelsea lasted until the end.

Lineup

Chelsea: Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella, Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, Ben Chilwell, Moses Caicedo, Lesley Ugochukwu, Cole Palmer (Enzo Fernandez 75th), Ian Maatsen (Conor Gallagher 75th), Mykhailo Mudryk (Raheem Sterling 68th), Nicolas Jackson (Armando Broja 87′).

Brighton & Hove Albion: Bart Verbruggen, Pervis Estupinan, Igor, Jan Paul van Hecke, Tariq Lamptey, Carlos Baleba (Billy Gilmour 64′), Mahmoud Dahoud (Jack Hinshelwood 70′), Kaoru Mitoma (Danny Welbeck 64′), Ansu Fati (Solly March 46′), Facundo Buonanotte (Adam Lallana 78′), Joao Pedro.

Manchester United’s Humiliating Loss to Brighton at Old Trafford

Manchester –

Manchester United lose again. Playing at home, MU was humiliated by Brighton with a final score of 1-3.

Premier League match between MU vs Brighton took place at Old Trafford, Saturday (16/9/2023) evening WIB. MU was three goals behind after being scored by Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro. Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ only goal in return was scored by substitute Hannibal Mejbri.

With this result, Manchester United have lost twice in a row after falling at home to Arsenal before the international break. This was MU’s third defeat in just the first five matches.

As a result, MU has now dropped to 12th in the standings after only gaining six points. Meanwhile, Brighton entered third place with 12 points.

The Course of the Match

MU started aggressively. Christian Eriksen’s pass at Marcus Rashford was continued with a stab from the left side of the penalty box. However, Rashford’s finish was thwarted by Jason Steele with his feet.

Another dangerous attack from MU. Sergio Reguilon sent a cross into the middle of the penalty box, Rasmus Hojlund failed to reach the ball.

GOAL! After escaping from MU’s pressure, Brighton launched a deadly attack. In the 20th minute, Danny Welbeck opened Brighton’s lead.

Simon Adingra ended the attack from the left wing with a cross. Adam Lallana let the ball pass through his legs and then Welbeck finished with a flick into the middle of the MU goal. Brighton leads 1-0.

Brighton made a dangerous attack after an hour of the match. Welbeck’s individual action ended with a right foot shot from outside the penalty box. The ball flew over the MU crossbar.

MU responded. A long pass from behind was received by Rashford. He broke through Brighton’s defense then fired a hard right-footed shot. The ball hit Joel Veltman then changed direction and hit the crossbar.

In the last five minutes before halftime, Hojlund found the back of Brighton’s goal. However, the goal was disallowed after being checked by VAR. The problem was that the ball from Rashford’s crossing had gone off the goal line.

MU again created dangerous opportunities. Rashford made a stab from the left wing to the front of the penalty box before firing a hard right-footed shot. The ball rolled towards the top corner of Brighton’s goal, but went wide.

Brighton still beat MU 1-0, which lasted until half-time.

After the restart, Rashford continued to trouble Brighton’s defense. Rashford accelerated on the left wing, then entered the penalty box before firing a hard shot. The ball just lodged on the outside of Brighton’s goal net.

GOAL! Brighton stole another goal after receiving pressure. Pascal Gross beat Andre Onana to increase Brighton’s lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

From the left wing, Kaoru Mitoma’s collaboration with Tariq Lamptey produced a horizontal pass that penetrated the MU defense. Gross found a gap in the penalty box, then fired a low shot into the middle of the goal.

Brighton seems to have locked in its victory over MU. In the 71st minute, Brighton scored their third goal and changed the score to 3-0.

Lamptey freely penetrated MU’s right wing, then sent a pass to Joao Pedro. In the penalty box, Joao Pedro finished with an accurate right-footed kick.

MU immediately responded to score a goal. Hannibal Mejbri scored MU’s first goal so the position changed 1-3 in the 73rd minute.

Lisandro Martinez’s pass found Mejbri in front of area D. Mejbri immediately fired a right-footed shot into the top corner of Brighton’s goal.

In the 79th minute, Brighton almost scored an additional goal. Mitoma was free in the penalty box while being shadowed by Victor Lindelof. At the near post, Mitoma shot a shot but it was saved by Andre Onana.

Onana made another save. Joao Pedro played deep to feed Evan Ferguson. The latter player responded with a horizontal shot, which aimed at Onana.

Even though they were ahead, Brighton was still eager to score another goal. In injury time, Ansu Fati troubled MU’s defense even though his shot was still off target.
