SRAG Cases Rise in Brazil,โข Driven by Rhinovirus adn COVID-19, New Data Shows
BRASรLIA – A new report from Infogipe indicates a concerning trend of Severe Acute Respiratory Illness โ(SRAG) cases โacross Brazil, with increases particularly noted in the South and Northeast regions. โฃWhileโฃ influenza A and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (VSR) remain factors, the study highlights a growing contribution โfrom Rhinovirus and, notably, COVID-19. โ
The data,โค analyzed โthru 2025, reveals a total of 168,538 SRAG cases, with 53.4%โข testing positive forโข a respiratory virus. โInfluenza A accounts for 24.3% of positive cases, while influenzaโ B represents only 1.1%. Though, respiratory โขsyncytial viruses compriseโฃ 44.7% of positive results, with Rhinovirus leading โat 47% and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) at 14%.
Recentโ epidemiological analysis of the last four weeks shows โa shift in prevalence among fatal cases: 23.8% attributed to โinfluenzaโค A, 2.2% to influenzaโ B, 18.1% toโข VSR, 27.9% toโ Rhinovirus, and 26.7% to COVID-19.
Several states are experiencing heightened SRAG incidence with a concerning long-termโค growth trend, including Amapรก, Amazonas, the Federal District, Espรญrito Santo, Goiรกs, and Rio de Janeiro. Six ofโข Brazil’s 27 federative units fall โขinto this category. โขAn additional 14 states are at alert, risk, or high-risk levels, butโค withoutโค a sustained growth pattern. These include Acre, Alagoas, Bahia, Maranhรฃo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paranรก, Paraรญba, Parรก, Rio Grande do Sul, Roraima,โค Santaโ Catarina, โฃand Sergipe.
Regional variations are also apparent. In the federal Districtโค and states like Amapรก, Goiรกs, and Rio de Janeiro, the increaseโฃ in SRAGโ cases among children and adolescents โis linked to Rhinovirus. Espรญrito Santo, though, is seeing a rise in cases primarily among the elderly.
Eight capitals โข- Aracaju, Boa Vista, Campo grande, cuiabรก, Joรฃo Pessoa,โค Porto Alegre, Salvador, and Sรฃo Luรญs – are currently at alert, risk, or high-risk levels for SRAG, though without a clearโข long-term growth trend. Manaus, Macapรก, โฃand โRioโ de Janeiro are reporting increased cases focused on children and adolescents under 14, while Vitรณria is experiencing a surge in cases among residents aged 65 and older.
Healthโ officials emphasize โthe importanceโค ofโ vaccination. Ella points to vaccination against COVID-19 as โฃessential for population protection, stating it remains the primary defense against severeโ illness and death. Tatiana โคPortella urges individuals in risk groups to verify thier vaccination status, noting that the elderly should receive booster doses every six months, while immunocompromised individualsโ require reinforcement โคannually.
Researchers at Infogipe note that the high case โขnumbers in many states are largely a reflection of the ongoing influenza A and VSR seasons, which are showing โsigns of decline nationally.
