Atwater, California, Mayor Richard Monteon today bestowed the honorary title of “Mayor for the Day” upon Leo Rivero-Cameron, a young resident battling a life-threatening condition. The gesture came as Rivero-Cameron’s planned trip to Walt Disney World, arranged through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, was postponed due to urgent heart surgery, according to a statement released by the city.

Rivero-Cameron, diagnosed with Neonatal Marfan Syndrome, spent the day touring various Atwater city departments and participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a newly opened Planet Fitness location. The honorary mayoral duties served as a way to uplift the young boy while he awaits medical clearance for travel, city officials said.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation facilitates experiences for children with critical illnesses, aiming to provide respite and joy during challenging times. According to the foundation’s website, a majority of parents report that wish experiences improve their child’s chances of survival and alleviate traumatic stress. The organization has been granting wishes for 44 years and relies on donations to continue its work.

Beyond his day as honorary mayor, Rivero-Cameron has also founded his own nonprofit organization, Leo’s Legacy Foundation, details of which can be found at LeosLegacyFoundation.org. The foundation’s purpose was not detailed in the city’s statement.

An Arkansas-based aviation group recently assisted in coordinating travel arrangements for another Make-A-Wish journey, demonstrating the broad network of support involved in fulfilling these wishes. The foundation currently operates 58 chapters across the United States.

As of today, Rivero-Cameron remains under medical care, and the timing of his trip to Disney World remains uncertain. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has not released a revised date for the trip.
