Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus will depart the club, effective instantly, following a mutual decision reached with the club’s leadership. The move comes amid increasing pressure and fan discontent with the team’s performance and recent transfer decisions.
The decision was made in a constructive meeting, according to Borussia Mönchengladbach supervisory board chairman Michael Hollmann. Hollmann stated the presidium, supervisory board, and management are now coordinating the process for identifying Virkus’ replacement. “Presidium, the supervisory board and management are in vote on the next steps and the further procedure,” he said.
Virkus assumed the role of sporting director in February 2022, succeeding Max Eberl. His tenure was marked by a series of challenging transfer windows and a failure to consistently deliver the on-field results expected by the club’s supporters. Mönchengladbach currently sits mid-table in the Bundesliga, failing to qualify for European competition.
