France Detains Tanker Suspected of โฃSanctions Evasion, Calls for โIncreased European Pressure on Russian “Shadow Fleet”
French authorities are currently inspecting the tanker Boracay,โค built in 2007, โwhich has been anchored off the coast of Sennazer, western France, forโข severalโ days. The detention is partโฃ ofโ a โฃbroader โeffort to disrupt Russia’s โuse โขof a “shadow fleet” to circumvent international sanctions imposed โคfollowing the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at a meeting ofโฃ European leaders in Denmark, urged โขother European nations to emulate France’s approach by โdetaining vessels suspected โขof aiding sanctions evasion. “You disrupt the business model by holding up, โขeven for a โขfew days โฃor weeks, and forcing โขthemโฃ to organize it differently,” โขMacron stated. Heโฃ confirmed โขFrance is investigating the boracay โ for serious violations.
The move comes as โthe โขEU โhas sanctioned hundreds of older tankers utilized by Russia to bypass oil exportโฃ restrictions. According to a French army source, between ten and fifteen shipsโข from thisโค “shadow fleet” โฃregularly pass near Brest, France.โ
While reports have linked the Boracay and โคother vessels to potentialโ involvement โinโ unidentified โdrone flights near โDenmark, Macron has not confirmed these connections.โค Previously, The Maritime executive reported the possibility of theseโ ships being used as launch platforms or decoys for drones.
French Prime Minister โขsebastien Lekornieโค has publicly thanked the French Navy for its operation targeting the Russian shadowโฃ fleet this weekend. French military โpersonnel remain aboardโ the โข Boracay โขas the examination continues.
