West Bengal BLO Dies by Suicide, Citing Election Commission Pressure – Second Such Case in a Week
krishnanagar, Nadia, West Bengal – A paraโ teacher working โคas a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in โNadia district died by โsuicide today, leaving a note blaming teh Election commission of India (ECI) for her death, according to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. โคThis marks the second such incident inโ the state within โthe past week, escalating concerns over the intense pressureโ associated with the Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls โค(SIR) process.
Banerjeeโ shared images of the two-page note, written in Bengali, on X (formerly Twitter).โ The deceased, โa 53-year-old woman from Chapra, identified as a BLO โfor โpart number 201 of Assembly Constituency 82,โ detailed feeling “humiliated”โค and driven to suicide by the demands of theโ job.
“I โwant toโ live. My family lacks nothing. But for this modest job,โ they pushed me to such humiliation that I was left with no choice but to die,” the noteโฃ reportedly states,โ directly holding the ECIโ responsible. The BLO also expressed unfamiliarity with the online components of the โSIR process, stating she hadโข completed 95% of the โoffline tasks โbut struggled with the digital requirements. โShe โฃaffirmed she did not supportโ any โpolitical party and described herself as a “vrey simpleโฃ person” unable to withstand the “inhuman pressure.”
Banerjee responded to theโ news with โขa strongly worded post onโฃ X, stating,โ “Profoundly shocked to knowโ of theโข death of yet another BLOโฆ How many more lives will be โคlost?โ How many more need โขtoโ die โfor this SIR? How many more dead bodies shall we see for โคthis process? This hasโ become truly alarming now!!”
The incident follows โthe suicide of an anganwadi worker engaged as a BLO in Jalpaiguri district last week, with her family also โคattributing โขthe death to work pressureโฃ related โขto SIR. banerjeeโข had previously, on Thursday, requested Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to halt the SIR exercise, alleging it wasโ “unplannedโ and โcoercive” and risked further loss of life and jeopardizing theโค process’s legitimacy.
A senior official at the Chief electoral Officer’s (CEO) office confirmed that the Nadia โDistrict Magistrate, also theโฃ District Electoral Officer, has โขbeen instructed to submit a report on the โคBLO’sโค death.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has claimed that atโฃ least โค34 people have โคdied by suicide in the state due to SIR, attributing the deaths to ECIโ negligence.โ TMC representatives met with CEO Manoj Agarwal โto โvoice their concerns, also citing issues with the BLO app frequently malfunctioning and a lack of adequate trainingโค forโ BLOs.
West bengal BJPโข president Samik Bhattacharya called for โขan examinationโ intoโ theโ death, questioning why similarโฃ incidents โhaven’t been reported inโข other states were SIR isโ also underway. He suggested โthe TMC’s claim โฃof 20 million potentiallyโข ineligible voters indicates the party is concerned about scrutiny of the electoral rolls.
Theโ SIR process is a โขnationwide effort โbyโข the ECI to update voter lists, โคensuringโฃ accuracy โฃand eliminating duplicate or deceased entries. It is being conducted together in 12 states and Union Territories.
