Cairo Revitalizes Historic Azbakeya Park, Book Wall Nears Completion
New Libraries Ready for Vendors as Cultural Hub Reopens
Cairo is breathing new life into its historic Azbakeya Park, with executive efforts underway to relocate vendors to newly constructed libraries along the famed book wall. This revitalization project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing, aims to restore a significant cultural landmark for the capital.
Cultural Landmark Restoration Underway
Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, confirmed that the process of housing vendors from the old market has commenced. The new facilities, situated within Azbakeya Park, are part of an initiative by the Ministry of Housing to enhance the area’s heritage and cultural appeal.
State Commitment to Heritage
The Governor emphasized the state’s dedication to preserving Cairo’s distinguished cultural icons, citing the Azbakeya book wall as a prime example. The Ministry of Housing has completed the construction of 133 libraries, designed to blend with the region’s heritage and facilitate the vibrant trade of old books, while incorporating essential civil protection measures.
The park’s overall development aligns with broader state objectives to revive the historical splendor of Cairo’s diverse heritage areas. This includes renewing their cultural and historical significance and bolstering their appeal to tourists.
Azbakeya Park: A Historic Green Space Renewed
Considered one of Cairo Governorate’s most ancient gardens, Azbakeya Park is being revitalized as a crucial green space and recreational area for residents. The revival project also involves restoring the architectural and heritage value of historical buildings within the park, integrating them with the new book-selling infrastructure.

This extensive renovation echoes successful urban renewal projects globally, such as the revitalization of London’s Southbank Centre, which transformed a cultural precinct and saw a significant increase in public engagement and economic activity.
