Alert about possible outbreaks of measles in countries of the Americas

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 9, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned about the possibility of measles outbreaks after the decrease in childhood vaccination coverage, for which it urged the countries of the Americas to avoid endemic transmission of the virus.

According to the evaluations of the PAHO Technical Advisory Group on vaccines, the risk of outbreaks of diseases that can be prevented with vaccination is at its highest point in the last 30 years.

According to estimates by the agency, carried out in 2021, more than 1.7 million children, from 28 countries and territories of the Americas, did not receive the first dose of the measles vaccine during their first years of life. In the same year, coverage with the first dose of the measles, rubella, and mumps vaccine, known as MMR or MMR, was 85 percent.

Only six countries achieved 95 percent or more coverage to keep these diseases eliminated, while 10 countries reported less than 80 percent coverage. This situation represents a high risk that unvaccinated children may become infected, if they are exposed to the virus.

Between 2000 and 2018, the measles vaccine prevented 23.2 million children worldwide from losing their lives. In this sense, the Americas was declared free of measles in 2016, however, the virus remained active in other parts of the planet, which is why countries such as Venezuela and Brazil reported an increase in imported cases between 2017 and 2019.

After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2022, only six nations reported imported measles cases, such as: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, the United States, and Paraguay.

COVID-19 during pregnancy increases risk of maternal mortality

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 22, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

SARS-CoV-2 infection can multiply by seven the risk of death and the chances of admission to intensive care in pregnant women, according to a study by researchers in the United States, which brings together data from 12 countries. The work stresses the importance of vaccination against coronavirus, for all women of childbearing age.

These are two of the conclusions of a meta-analysis with data from 12 studies from 12 countries, including Spain and the United States, in which 13,136 women have participated. The results, which also show increased risks for babies, are published in BMJ Global Health.

“This study provides the most comprehensive evidence to date suggesting that COVID-19 is a threat during pregnancy,” summarizes Emily R. Smith, of the George Washington University Milken Institute and lead author of the study.

In some cases, women hesitate or refuse to receive the vaccine or booster dose, because they do not believe that COVID-19 poses risks or are not convinced of its safety during pregnancy, recalls a note from the university US.

Some doctors may even hesitate to give the vaccine to a pregnant woman, even if it is recommended, Smith says.

The researchers scrutinized data from pregnant women from Ghana, China-Hong Kong, Italy, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Turkey, Uganda and the United States.

They found that, compared with uninfected pregnant women, pregnant women with COVID-19 infection had a seven times higher risk of dying during pregnancy or childbirth, and a nearly four times higher risk of being admitted to the intensive care unit. .

Regarding thromboembolic disease or blood clots, the danger is more than five times higher. Also, a 15 times greater risk of needing ventilator treatment and 23 times more likely to develop pneumonia.

Babies born to women with COVID-19 infection were nearly twice as likely to be admitted to a neonatal care unit; almost three times more likely to be born moderately preterm (before 34 weeks); and 19% more likely to have low birth weight.

But, unlike the results of previous reviews, COVID-19 infection was not associated with an increased risk of stillbirth at 28 weeks of pregnancy or more, nor with restricted growth, reports Agencias Internacionales.

NASA performs in-orbit deployment of a water satellite

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 1, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Two cameras on NASA’s Ocean and Surface Water Survey spacecraft captured the in-orbit deployment of the mast and antenna panels of the spacecraft’s main science instrument on video over four days.

The SWOT satellite was launched into Earth orbit on December 16 with the aim of measuring the height of water over more than 90% of the earth’s surface, providing a high-definition study of our planet’s water for the first time.

At each end of the mast are the two antennas that belong to the innovative Ka-Band Radar Interferometer (Karin) instrument. The instrument is designed to make accurate measurements of the height of water in freshwater bodies and the Earth’s oceans.

Karin will see eddies, currents and other oceanic features less than 20 kilometers wide. She will also collect data on lakes and reservoirs larger than 62,500 square meters and rivers over 100 meters wide.
