Guyanese Duo Represent Venezuela with Mathematical Prowess at International Olympiad
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Two Venezuelan mathletes, Joseph Pérez and Diego Padrino, are competing at the International Mathematical Olympiad, bringing a unique dynamic to the competition: both are originally from Guyana. The pair, representing venezuela, are not only striving for a podium finish but also seeking academic opportunities through their performance.
The students experienced a “shock” upon realizing the complexity gap between classroom problems and those presented at the Olympiad level. despite this initial challenge, they are dedicated to rigorous readiness, balancing their schoolwork with advanced mathematical studies and extracurricular activities like table tennis and baseball.
“It has taught us that when we have a problem, that is,of any kind,to think about what would be the quickest way to do it,” Pérez explained, reflecting on the lessons learned from the experience.
The olympiad represents more than just a competition for Pérez and Padrino; a strong showing could unlock university scholarships. “I would tell them that you have nothing to lose if you try,” Pérez encouraged, urging other young people to participate in mathematical olympiads. Padrino added, “I would invite them to participate because it is not known exactly what opportunities participating in an Olympics can bring them.”
Supported by their parents and school, the Guyanese-born Venezuelans are aiming to secure a top position for Venezuela and open doors to future academic pursuits.
