Erika Helin talks openly about her diagnosis. Timo Korhonen

On her Instagram account, media personality Erika Helin talks about the diagnosis she received two years ago, which changed her life. Helin is currently in hospital due to severe pain. She has endometriosis.

– I always wonder how bad endometriosis pain can really get. Apparently, the feeling of being stabbed from the inside with several knives for an endless time would describe (so far) the worst pain quite well, Helin writes in his publication.

He says that he is waiting for the surgery, which is about two weeks from now, but he did not know that he would have to be hospitalized even before the operation.

Helin has previously told Iltalehti that it has proven very difficult to get surgery due to endometriosis.

Helin has also recently updated his health in his Instagram stories. He writes about the small wins of his treatment. The swelling is going down and soon he will be able to walk on his own without a wheelchair.

Helin lives in Malta and writes that the level of healthcare in the country is great, as long as you manage to get in.

– I have full confidence that I am in good hands here, there is no reason to worry, he reassures his followers.

Helin says that after receiving the diagnosis, everything in her life has changed.

– I’ve been lucky that most of the time I’ve only suffered from moderate pain, i.e. pain that you can live with at home. Recently, first aid has become familiar, and it no longer feels like the situation is completely in one’s own hands, he updates on his condition.

Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecological diseases. Endometriosis affects 10–15 percent of people of childbearing age defined as female at birth.

Endometriosis causes, among other things, chronic pain and infertility. Helin says in the stories section of Instagram that he has decided to talk openly about his illness, because it usually goes undiagnosed, even though detecting it early could prevent complications in the future.

Helin says that she was hospitalized for endometriosis for the first time a couple of years ago. He went to the emergency room because the button on his pants could no longer be closed due to swelling.

At that time, she stayed in the bed ward of the Women’s Clinic for five days, where she was found to have endometriomas, which grow around the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

He says that he was frightened by the loss of his ability to function and went on a trip to Asia after he recovered. Helin started, among other things, Thai boxing, because he wanted to be physically in better shape and recover better from surgery. In addition, he reduced partying and learned to spend evenings also without alcohol.

– Physical illness directly affects mental health. Chronic pain, the feeling of losing one’s femininity and an identity crisis have brought their own challenges, Helin writes.

Due to the illness, she has also had to deal with possible infertility and to think about a new way of becoming a mother.

– Of course, the disease reduces the quality of life, but in the big picture, I feel that it has helped to make big changes for the better. Things are better in perspective, I consider health more a privilege than a matter of course.

Helin has become known, among other things, as a finalist in the Miss Finland competition in 2018 and after participating Paradise Hotel-reality series. Since then, he is known, among other things, as an Onlyfans content producer, and he has openly talked about his experiences of sexual harassment in public.
