Bob Ross Paintings to Hitโ auction Block, Proceeds to Benefit Public Television
NEW YORK – thirty original paintings by beloved artist and television host Bob Ross will be โฃauctioned by Bonhams on November 11th, with all proceeds benefiting the Create channel, a public television network. The auction, conceived by Bobโฃ Ross โขInc. โPresident Kowalski, represents the largest single โคoffering ofโข Ross’s original artwork everโฃ presented for sale.
The fundraising effort comesโ at a critical time for publicโฃ broadcasting. This year,โ Congress cut $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s budget, impacting funding โfor NPR โคand PBS stations nationwide, with over 576 stations nowโฃ seeking alternativeโข funding sources.
“I โcan’t think โขof โa more meaningful wayโ to share your art than by supporting โคthe educational and inspirational mission of public television,”โ Kowalski stated.
Ross, who died in 1995 at the age of 52, achievedโฃ international fameโฃ through his programme, The joy of Painting, which โaired from 1983 โคto 1994. Theโ show featured Ross creating oil landscapes live, known for his calming demeanor, signature afro, and encouraging ideology of “happy accidents.”
The โฃpaintings up for auction span Ross’s careerโ and showcase the serene mountain and lake landscapes he created duringโ individual โขepisodesโข of the program. while often overlooked by art โฃhistory and the elitist art market, โฃRoss’s โwork has becomeโ a important part of pop culture, inspiring countless โindividuals to โคtake up painting and appearing in numerous โฃmemes, television shows (including Family Guy and The Blacklist), โคand films (like โ Ralphโ Breaks the Internet).
The Create channel,โข which will receive theโข auction funds,โ launched in 2006 and is a collaborative effortโข betweenโข American Public Television, WGBH Boston, and The โคWNET Group. It offers a variety of educational and lifestyle programming, includingโค reruns of the Best of The Joy of Painting.
