Tรกnaiste Dismisses โขConorโ McGregor‘s โPresidentialโ Bid as Unlikely, while Bob Geldof Explores Support
DUBLIN – โ Tรกnaiste Micheรกl โMartin has stated that former โUFC champion Conor McGregor has a “negligible chance” of securing a nomination for the upcomingโข presidential election, as speculationโ continues to swirl around potential candidates. This comes as reports emerge that representatives for Bob Geldof, the Boomtown Rats โขsinger and Live Aid organiser, are activelyโ gauging support among local councillors.
The comments from Martin, reported by The Irish Times, effectively โฃdownplay the prospect โof McGregor entering the race, despite the fighter’s public expressions of interest.โ The presidential election โขis slated to take place later this year, โfollowing the current President Michael D. Higgins’ decision โnot to โseek a third term.
Meanwhile,โข sources โฃindicate Geldof โฃis exploring a potential run.โฃ Marc MacSharry, aโค former Sligo-Leitrim TD and now a consultant with Pontisโฃ Advisory Limited, has been contacting councillors acrossโ the country, including those in County Kerryโ – where the first โคspecialโ meeting for presidential hopefuls to pitch for support will be held – to assess the โlevel of backing Geldof might receive.
The nature of these contacts, according โto The Irish Times,โ wasโ primarily โขresearch-based, focused on gauging interest ratherโ than activelyโข soliciting nominations. Autonomous councillor Charlie Farrelly of Kerry confirmed receiving a call from MacSharry, stating he declined to offer support to Geldof. “I also got a call from โขMarc MacSharry asking if โBobโค Geldofโค was โlooking for council support, woudl I support him. I said no,” Farrellyโ said. Other councillors contacted echoed this sentiment, noting the inquiries were about assessing potentialโ support, notโ requesting formal endorsements.
MacSharry declined โคto comment on the specifics of theโข research or identifyโ his client, stating, “You โwill respect that Pontis Advisory Limited doโค notโข comment on our clients’ details โคor specific services beingโ provided to them.”
Geldof himself hasโฃ not yet publiclyโฃ committed to a run, nor has he appeared on the list of candidates scheduled to address Kerry County Council on Monday. Though, he reportedly discussed the โคpossibility with Taoiseach Martin last โคweek, who informedโ Geldof he could not offer a nomination, as Martin is โbacking former Dublin GAA managerโข Jim gavin as Fianna Fรกil’s candidate.
Alongside Geldof, businessman โGareth Sheridan and former solicitor Nick Delehantyโฃ are expected to address the โคKerry County Council meeting as independent hopefuls. Attempts to reach โGeldof โขfor comment have been unsuccessful.
The โขIrish presidential election requires candidates โto secure nominations fromโฃ at least 20 members of โคthe Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) or from โfour county โcouncils. The process of โsecuring these nominations is currently underway, with several individualsโ vying for the opportunity to challenge forโ the รras, the official residence of the President ofโฃ Ireland.
