A Call for Independent Voices on the Board of Education
Editor’s note: following is anโ opinionโ submitted by Westporter Camilo riano.
The upcoming Board of Education election presents a crucial possibility to reshape theโ direction โฃof our schools. Recent historyโค demonstrates a concerning pattern of partisan control,โ beginningโ two โขyears ago when a Democratic majority was secured with โtheโ support of a write-in candidate who campaigned asโข independent. this action altered the establishedโ tradition of simple โขmajorities on โคWestport boards โand resulted inโค the loss of a Republicanโข seatโฃ previously held by jamie Fitzgerald, effectivelyโข diminishing portrayal for over 2,500 โresidents.
As then, concerns haveโข grown regarding โฃacademicโ performance, transparency in decision-making,and the handling of critical issues like support for Special Education families. these issues highlight the potential consequences of a board operating without diverse perspectives and open โdialog.
The fundamental difference in candidate selection between โthe parties โฃis stark. While some prioritize experiance and qualifications, others appear to prioritize โคstrict party loyalty. this can lead to a lack of โindependent thoght andโ a reluctance to โchallengeโ the prevailing party line. In over four years of observing โคBoard proceedings, instances โฃof Democrats dissenting on significantโฃ issues have been notably absent, โฃwith votes consistently aligning along party lines.
It’s time for a change. A Board of Education comprised of independentโ thinkers,โค committed to theโ best interests of all Westport โฃstudents, is essential. โฃ
That’s whyโ I, along with many others, am voting for Hordon, Hopson, Frankel, and Zucaro. These candidates offer the experience, character, and – crucially – the independence needed to address the challenges โfacing our schools.
Though, this isn’t about party affiliation. Whetherโข you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or unaffiliated voter, supporting all four of these โฃcandidates is a vote for a โmore responsive, transparent, and effective Board โof Education. It’s a โฃvote for prioritizing the needs ofโฃ our children and ensuring a โbrighter future for westport’s schools. Voting for โall four is โtheโข right โthing to do.
