Chamber of Deputies Board Remains in Place as Consensus Falters on Newโ Leadership
Mexico City – The current board โขof directors of the Chamber of Deputies will remain in place after โคlegislators failed to reach an agreement on a new leadership team during a preparatory session today. Theโ decision, approved unanimously in five minutes by all benches,โ adheres to articles 17โฃ and 27 of the Organic Law of the General Congress. โขMarcela Gutiรฉrrez Lunaโค willโ continue โto act as โขthe currentโค board’s leader.
The inability toโค form a newโข board stems from โdisagreement between the MORENA party and theโ National Action Party (PAN) regarding potential candidates. While โthe PAN has submitted a list of potential leaders – including Kenya Lรณpezโ Rabadรกn, Germรกn โMartรญnez, Federico Dรถring, and Margarita Zavala – MORENA’s hardline faction views some of the โฃproposed legislators as “veryโค aggressive” towards their legislative โinitiatives. This impasse prevents securing the two-thirds vote โrequired for approval.
Ricardo Monreal, MORENA coordinator in San Lรกzaro, statedโค that the agreement to maintain the current boardโ provides “institutionality and governance” to the Chamber, adding, “Weโฃ are in the processing of the โคelection of the โboard of directors that by law, it is up โฃto the PAN, and we will achieveโค it in the next few days.”
Josรฉ โคElรญasโข Lixa, โcoordinator of โthe PAN deputies,โ acknowledged the lack of current conditionsโค to build a consensus, but expressed hope for a resolution. “It is evident that at this time there are no conditions to build a proposal of the board of directors that meets a vote of twoโ thirds of the legislators,” he said, adding that the PAN’s proposalโ remains with the Political Coordination Board. Heโค also voiced support for maintaining the currentโฃ board to avoid disruption.
The selection of โa new board is constitutionally mandatedโ to rotate โฃleadership among the different political โฃparties represented in the Chamber. The currentโ situation highlightsโค the ongoing challengesโข ofโ cross-partyโค cooperation in Mexican politicsโ and the importance of securing consensus for effective legislative function. Lixaโค expressed optimism that a solution can beโ reached “in the โขfollowing hours.”
