90-year-Old Karate Master Shares Secrets to a Long Life
HARRISBURG, PA – At 90 years old, โขBen Rocuskie โขisn’t slowing down. The Sunbury, Pennsylvaniaโค native recently โฃachievedโ a 9th-degree black โขbelt in โคkarate and continues โto study pressureโ point techniques โin self-defence, โproving that learning – โคand staying active โ- has no โage limit. Rocuskie credits a โcombinationโ of martial arts, lifelong learning, and โคa loving marriage for his โremarkable longevity.
Born november 14, 1934, Rocuskie’s early life was โshaped byโ a simpler time, recalling memories of an outhouse, โdrawing waterโค from a โspring, and listening to โข”The lone Ranger” on the radio. He worked in and around coal mines and as a pinsetter in aโ bowling alley before โgraduating from drexel University in 1960โ and โขbecoming a professional engineer in 1961.
Rocuskie began his martial arts journey โat age โ48, โคtaking โkarate โclassesโ at theโค dojo in Holy Name of Jesus Church in โHarrisburg. Fifteen years โlater, he was promoted to senior โinstructor โขof both โคkarate and tai โขchi, โคa position he held for the next 25 โคyears. His dedication is โevidenced by the numerous awards and trophies he’s earned in local and state competitions.
Though, Rocuskie doesn’t identify as a “warrior.” “A warrior is a fighter. Karate is self-defense,” heโ explains.
He attributes his health and vitality to โขkarate, tai chi, and his wife of 68 years, Marlene, whomโค he affectionately calls “myโค angel.” Theโค couple has three children and six grandchildren. Rocuskie’s philosophy centers on mindful decision-making. “You have two choices, and eachโค choice brings more choices,” โhe โsays.
He emphasizes the importance of continuousโ learning, expressing disappointment when students stop practicingโฃ afterโ achieving โฃtheir 1st-degree โฃblack belt.”that’s only the beginning. When you graduate from 8th grade, from high school,โ from college, it’sโข called ‘commencement.’ It’s the beginning.โข That’s what the blackโข belt is. Right now, I’m studying โฃpressure point techniques in self-defense. โคAfter 42 years in martial arts, yes, I canโข still learn.”
