The challenge sparked a rivalry between William Cloutier and Oussama Fares, both vying to be the first to obtain the key, according to Noovo Moi. Fares attempted to speed up the thaw by holding chili peppers in his mouth, believing the resulting heat would hasten the ice’s disintegration.
Mona de Grenoble questioned the efficacy of the tactic, stating, “I don’t want to screw things up, but I’m not sure the pepper changes anything to the temperature of your breath,” Noovo Moi reported.
The unusual method prompted other contestants to join in, employing a variety of techniques including warming their hands over a flame and pressing them against the ice, blowing air, rubbing, and even using their heads to attempt to melt the block. Oussama Fares successfully retrieved the key, the purpose of which remains undisclosed.
