Ohio State Defeats Texas in Season Opener, But Both Teams โShow Flaws
ARLINGTON,โ TX – Ohioโ State defeated Texas โค38-17 in a highly โคanticipatedโข season opener saturday, but the performance from bothโ teams left observers questioning their โchampionship potential. While the Buckeyes emerged victorious, โขneither program displayed the dominance โexpected of โCollege Football โคPlayoff contenders.
The game highlighted the โchallenges of relying on inexperiencedโข quarterbacks. Ohioโ Stateโข utilizedโ both Julian Sayin โขand โขLincoln Kienle, with Sayin completing 5-of-8โข passes for 72 yards and a โขtouchdown, and Kienle โฃgoing 8-of-12 for 89 yards and a touchdown. however, theโค overall passing โattack struggled, producing only three explosive plays. Lincoln Manning went โ17-of-30 for 206 yards.
“You can’t expect Manning and/or Sayin to walk โunder center or stand in the shotgun for the first time โขin a big time moment, and look โข(and play) like a fifth-yearโ senior,” wroteโ USA TODAY Sports’ Matt Hayes.
Conversely,Texas’s offense alsoโ faced difficulties. The Buckeyes’ defense,โค led by coordinator Tim Patricia, consistently pressured the quarterbackโข and effectively covered receivers. Ohio State generated pressure with four and five rushers, mirroring the defensive styles of teamsโ like Wake forestโค and Boston College.
Will Howard’s five years of experience at Kansas State were contrasted with the inexperience of the Ohio State quarterbacks. Howard threw 1,202 passes during hisโข collegiateโ career and won โa Big 12 โคchampionship. Hayes emphasized โคthe “gigantic value” of that experience, noting that a fifth-year senior possesses a knowledge of defensiveโ schemes thatโค younger quarterbacksโค lack.
Looking ahead, Ohio State’s schedule appears manageable, offering โopportunities for Sayin andโข receiver Jeremiah Smith to develop chemistry. Texas, though,โ facesโฃ aโค more daunting path, with โคupcoming matchups against defenses expected to be as strong โคor stronger โขthan Ohioโ State’s. The Longhorns’ โขschedule mayโค prove too โฃchallenging to โคovercome in pursuit of โa CFP berth.”Texas, on the other hand,โข has some heavy lifting ahead – against defenses thatโ will be as good or better than โOhio State. And against offenses โฃthatโฃ won’tโข struggle to score points,”โ Hayes noted.
