Iran’s Military Weakness & Potential Regime Change | Israel & US Attacks

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor March 1, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Stanford University political scientist Maximilian Terhalle assesses that Iran possesses limited capacity to counter direct military attacks from Israel and the United States. “Since the attacks last summer, there’s been no significant strengthening of Iran’s air defense capabilities,” Terhalle stated.

While Iranian forces are attempting retaliatory strikes against U.S. Forces stationed throughout the Middle East, Terhalle characterized these actions as largely symbolic. “The Iranians are trying to attack everywhere the Americans are stationed in the Middle East,” he said, “but these are more like pinpricks. Iran does not have the firepower to weaken the Americans.”

Terhalle suggests the combined military pressure from Israel and the U.S. Could potentially destabilize the Iranian government. “The chance to eliminate essential elements of the elite is certainly there,” he noted. “But whether that is enough to bring the revolution to the streets remains to be seen.” A Stanford University event held October 30, 2025, explored the implications of the June 2025 Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, supported by U.S. Bombing, and its impact on the regional landscape.

The political scientist similarly highlighted the significance of the responses – or lack thereof – from Russia and China. “In the hour of decision, we are not seeing any support from Moscow and Beijing for the regime,” Terhalle observed. “Putin seems to consider access to Trump more important than Iran.”

Abbas Milani, Director of Iranian Studies at Stanford University, has previously noted a growing disconnect between Iranian society and its government, a dynamic that could influence the outcome of any internal upheaval. Milani’s research, conducted at Stanford’s Hoover Institution, focuses on the complexities of Iranian politics and the historical misunderstandings surrounding the nation.

Recent analysis from Stanford University Press’s publication, “Between Iran and Zion,” details the historical presence of a significant Jewish population within Iran, currently numbering around 25,000, and their complex relationship with both the Pahlavi monarchy and the Islamic Republic. This internal diversity adds another layer of complexity to the potential for political change within the country.

As of February 27, 2026, Stanford University’s Israel Studies Program has launched, generating both support and criticism within the academic community, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.

Tom Shoval Backs Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle Amid Dismissal Reports

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor February 26, 2026
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Israeli filmmaker Tom Shoval has publicly voiced his support for Tricia Tuttle, the director of the Berlin International Film Festival, as her position faces scrutiny from the German government. In a Wednesday evening Instagram post, Shoval described Tuttle as a model of cultural leadership, praising her “cosmopolitan, progressive, and artistic vision” and, crucially, her “unparalleled integrity.”

Shoval’s post specifically referenced Tuttle’s decision to screen his film, A Letter to David, at the 2025 Berlinale, a period coinciding with the captivity of his brother and David Cunio as hostages. “Tricia saw beyond politics,” Shoval wrote, “She saw the human suffering of a family and understood the urgency of giving them a voice.” He further stated that Tuttle recognized the moral responsibility of the film world to advocate for their release.

Following David Cunio’s release, Tuttle invited the film back to the festival with a new ending, and, according to Shoval, “met with the family in tears. We felt like a family.”

Shoval’s statement comes in response to reports that German Culture Minister Wolfram Weimar is considering removing Tuttle from her position. According to reports, Weimar has scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the supervisory board of Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes (KBB), the federal agency that oversees the Berlinale, for Thursday. Weimar chairs the board. He has stated publicly that “The Berlinale is not a place for agitation, threats, and antisemitism. Israel hatred must not be allowed to run rampant there, let alone be financed with taxpayers’ money.”

Bild newspaper reported Wednesday that Weimar and Tuttle have agreed that a new leadership structure for the Berlinale is necessary. Tuttle assumed leadership of the internationally renowned film festival in April 2024, inheriting a festival that had faced criticism for perceived one-sided criticism of Israel during award ceremonies and accusations of antisemitism.

The future of Tuttle’s leadership remains uncertain pending the outcome of Thursday’s KBB supervisory board meeting.

Israel Revokes Citizenship of Convicted Attackers, Orders Deportation

by Priya Shah – Business Editor February 10, 2026
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Israel has revoked the citizenship of two convicted attackers and ordered their deportation, a move unprecedented since the passage of a controversial law three years ago. The individuals, accused of receiving financial support from the Palestinian Authority (PA), had carried out attacks against Israeli civilians, according to a statement released by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

The Knesset, Israel’s parliament, approved the legislation enabling such deportations in 2023. Its first application has drawn criticism from legal observers who argue it contravenes international law by rendering individuals stateless. Netanyahu stated that “many more” such revocations and deportations would follow. Previous reports indicated that proceedings had been initiated against hundreds of people.

Israeli media reports identify the two individuals as Israeli Arabs who had been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their involvement in attacks. Both are expected to be deported to the Gaza Strip. one immediately upon release from prison and the other after completing his sentence. The law stipulates deportation to areas under Palestinian control.

The move comes amid a surge in attacks against Israelis, particularly since the start of the conflict in Gaza. However, most attacks have been carried out by Palestinians from the West Bank, who are not Israeli citizens. Simultaneously, there has been an increase in violence by extremist Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Authority, which has repeatedly called for a two-state solution, has been under increasing pressure from Israel and its allies. In September 2025, the US government reportedly blocked visa applications for PA representatives, seeking to halt their efforts to gain recognition of a Palestinian state. France and the United Kingdom were among nations signaling their intent to recognize Palestine, with French President Emmanuel Macron describing the move as a “last-minute emergency” to prevent the complete collapse of the two-state solution.

According to the German broadcaster ZDF, the current situation follows a period of relative calm after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on October 10th. However, that ceasefire is described as fragile. The PA is considered by international actors as the most pragmatic partner for negotiations, unlike Hamas, which rejects Israel’s right to exist. The PA represents approximately five million Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

In November 2025, the UN Security Council passed a resolution supporting a Gaza peace plan proposed by US President Trump. Although Israel welcomed the resolution, citing its call for the disarmament of Hamas, the Hamas organization and Islamic Jihad rejected it, stating it did not meet Palestinian political and humanitarian demands. The PA has called for the immediate implementation of the UN resolution.
