MANILA, Philippines – Newly-elected Blue Ribbon Committee Chairman Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson announced Tuesday he will conduct โขan “internal cleansing” of the panel following allegations linking a staff โmember to irregularitiesโค in flood โขcontrol projects.
The moveโ comes after Bulacan 1stโข district assistant โengineer Brice Hernandez presented conversationsโ from December 2022 during a House hearing with anโ individual identified as Beng Ramos, who โคHernandezโข claimed wasโข a staff member of Senator Jinggoy Estrada.
Senator Estrada has stated he has hadโ noโ staff named Beng Ramos since entering the โขSenate in 2004, clarifying that the individual was previously affiliated with the Senate โขBlue Ribbon Committee and was a formerโข girlfriend of one of his staff members.
Lacson emphasized the necessity of theโ review given the committee’s mandate to investigate government misconduct and ensure accountability. “Since I am not sureโข if there is only โฃoneโ beng Ramos in the Blue Ribbon โคcommittee which I was just elected โby my peers to chair, just โฃlike DPWH Sec โVince Dizon, maybe โขI also need โขto do a simultaneous internal cleansing while buckling down toโ work,” he said.
Lacson was elected chairman ofโ the Blue Ribbon panel on Tuesday, succeeding Senator โฃRodante Marcoleta.
Investigation Underway
Estrada’sโ officeโข has formally requested an investigation from the โofficeโค of Senateโฃ Secretary Atty.Renatoโค bantug Jr.โค regarding Ramos’s actions, asserting that โshe “was never โauthorized toโ use the senator’s name nor toโ act in his behalf.”
“If proven guilty of misrepresenting theโฃ Senator, we expect that she will be meted with the appropriate penalty,” Estrada’s chief of staff Atty. Racquel Mejia stated in aโ letter.
Estrada also indicated he intends to file aโข case against Hernandez regarding โคallegations made during the โHouse โinquiry โthat โhe received a 30%โ kickback from P355 โฃmillion in allocations. -AOL, GMA integrated News
