Indonesian Officials Respond to Widespread ‘One Piece’ Flag Displays Ahead of Independence Day
Jakarta, Indonesia – August 5, 2025 – Indonesian officials have addressed the recent surge in displays of the flag from the popular manga and anime series One Piece across the nation, occurring in the lead-up to the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence on August 17th.While acknowledging the displays as a form of youth expression, authorities cautioned against any actions that could disrespect the national flag, the Merah Putih (Red and White).
The phenomenon, observed in numerous cities including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan, has sparked debate online and within political circles. The One Piece flag, featuring the Jolly Roger of Monkey D. Luffy, has been flown alongside Indonesian flags, prompting concerns about potential disrespect towards national symbolism.Coordinating Minister for political, Legal, and Security affairs, Hadi Prasetyo, stated that the flag displays are permissible as a form of creative expression, echoing a similar sentiment from members of the People’s Representative Council (DPR). “If it’s a form of expression, it’s okay, there’s no problem,” Prasetyo told reporters at the Jakarta Presidential Palace. However, he firmly emphasized that the One Piece flag should never be displayed in a way that diminishes the significance of the Merah Putih.”But do not bring or juxtapose it, or contest it wiht a red and white flag. It should not be like that, we as children of the nation, the red and white flag is the only one,” he stressed.
This clarification comes after widespread social media posts showcasing the flags, frequently enough accompanied by discussions about societal frustrations and a perceived disconnect between the government and its citizens.Deputy Chairman of House of Representatives Commission XIII, Andreas Hugo Pareira, framed the displays as a protected form of civilian freedom and a signal for government introspection. “This is part of Human Rights,as a form of freedom in conveying the aspirations and anxiety of the community,” Pareira stated. He suggested the government should view the displays as an indication of underlying issues requiring attention.
Prasetyo also warned against potential manipulation of the trend by parties seeking to exploit the youth’s enthusiasm for disruptive purposes. He urged young Indonesians to remember the sacrifices made during the Indonesian National Revolution (1945-1949) and to prioritize safeguarding the nation’s independence. “This is in August, the month of independence. Our independence was not a gift, it was the sacrifice of the heroes. We as the young generation of this task now guarding it,” he said.
