brazil to Link Sustainability โCredentials โto Gender and โฃRacial Equity, โFirst Lady Announces at Climate Week
BELEM, BRAZIL – Brazil is poised to redefine sustainability standards by requiring companies to demonstrate gender and racial equity as a condition for being โฃconsidered โคenvironmentally responsible, First Lady Janja daโข Silva announced during a panel discussion atโค Climate โWeek NYC. The move, unveiled ahead of Brazil’s hosting ofโ COP30 in Belรฉm next year, signals a broadening of โขthe nation’s approach to climate action beyond purely environmental concerns.
Da Silva highlighted the disproportionate impact of environmental challenges on women, particularly those in ruralโฃ communities. “These women are the ones suffering theโ violence,” she stated, “And theyโค showed great resilience.โ Theyโ were able to reinvent themselves. โขThis is very beautiful to seeโ howโ they resist and transform; not just โขthe โฃfarm women,โฃ butโค the water women, the forest women.”
The Brazilian government is developing guidelines to enforce these new requirements, according to โคCristina Frรณes de Borja Reis, Deputy Secretary for โฃEnduring โeconomicโ Development at โคthe Brazil โMinistry of Finance. “Since we have this โคpotential to be a great leader on the topic of sustainability, we wanted to make it veryโ clear that for us it’s not only about environmental and climate dimensions,” de Borja โขReis explained.”Sustainability is alsoโฃ about economic and social dimensions. We have to grow โand develop while โwe โreduce inequalities.”
Brazil’sโ strategy for COP30 is rooted inโ the Indigenous concept of “mutirรฃo,” signifying collective effort towards a shared objective. The nation’s โฃsustainability discourse also draws upon theโ “curupira,” a figure from โBrazilian folklore representing a forest spirit that protects rainforests and punishes environmental destruction. “The โmessage we want to passโ on is that all people should protect forests and theโฃ biome and โnature, for nowadaysโ and future generations,” de Borja Reis said.
Both da Silva โขand โFood Tankโ President Danielle โฃNierenbergโฃ emphasized โthat impactful climate action extends beyond major conferences like COP30 and Climate Week. “COP is not just happeningโ in Belem,” da Silva asserted. “COP has to be embedded in allโ of โus, inside of us and in our territories around the world. It has โฃto be embedded in everything that we do.”
