Adam Hložek on Controlling Robert Lewandowski and Czech Republic’s European Championship Qualifier

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

According to offensive all-rounder Adam Hložek, one of the keys to success in Friday’s European Championship qualifier in Poland will be for the Czech footballers to be able to control the opponent’s biggest star, Robert Lewandowski.

He still considers the 35-year-old Barcelona gunner to be one of the best strikers in the world. At the same time, Hložek admitted in a video interview for the media from FAČR that he is struggling with the current smaller workload in Leverkusen. Nevertheless, the twenty-one-year-old attacker tries to behave professionally in order to get a chance at least in the cups.

Lewandowski missed the Poles in October due to injury, but returned to the national team for the November program. The star gunner has scored 81 goals in 144 matches for the national team and is unquestionably the best scorer in his country.

“I see him as one of the best strikers in the world. I think he shows that every year when he always scores 20 or more goals. It will be very important for us to prepare for this player and prevent him from scoring those goals,” he said Hložek before the early evening departure of the national team to Warsaw.

Before the final matches of the qualifying group, the Czech team holds the progressive second place behind the leader Albania and can definitely secure participation in next year’s championship in Germany already on Friday. But he needs to win in Warsaw and at the same time hope that Moldova does not beat the Albanians at home on the same day. Regardless of the other results, a win in the last group match at home against Moldova would send the Czech Republic to the final tournament.

“We are definitely going to Poland for three points. We know how the cards are played. Now we have two important matches waiting for us, with which we can end it and take the last step to the Euros,” Hložek declared.

In the first duel in the group, the Czechs beat Poland 3:1 at home at the start of the group in March, after already leading 2:0 in the third minute. “We can definitely take something from that match. We know it’s a great team, great players from great clubs. We also know they’ve changed their coach. Maybe their tactics will be different, maybe they’ll prepare differently for us. That’s up to to our implementation team to prepare us for it. And then it’s up to us, the players, to give the best performance,” said Hložek.

At the beginning of the season, the workload at the club is lower. In the 11 rounds of the German league so far, he has not started for Leverkusen, the undefeated leader of the table, even once in the starting line-up. From the beginning, he only got a chance in the domestic cup and the Europa League.

“We are undefeated in 17 (competitive) games, we are doing well. I know that the minutes are not ideal for me. It is difficult for me in this. Unfortunately, I can’t say anything, because we are winning and the results are coming,” said Hložek. “Of course, I try to behave professionally and work in training so that I get minutes at least in those cups,” added the former Sparta Prague player.

SGS Essen Impresses in Goalless Draw Against Bayer Leverkusen in Women’s Bundesliga

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 5, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

SGS Essen remains on course for success in the women’s Bundesliga. On Saturday the team was able to surprise in Leverkusen.

SGS Essen remains undefeated for the third time in a row.

In the goalless draw in Leverkusen, coach Markus Högner’s team showed an absolutely convincing performance and were closer to victory for almost the entire game than the hosts, who have had a really strong season so far and are in fourth place in the table for good reason.

The Werkself initially started the game strongly, but after just a few minutes the Essen team had acclimatized, kept the game balanced and had a slight increase in chances.

But Bayer also had a great chance when SGS goalkeeper Sophia Winkler was able to prevent the deficit in a one-on-one situation.

Convincing second half for SGS Essen

So we went into the dressing room without any goals, from which the Ruhrstadt team returned as if unleashed and created opportunities like on a conveyor belt over the course of the second half. The best of these belonged to Annalena Rieke, who hit the ball onto the crossbar from a central position.

There was virtually nothing left from the hosts going forward. The SGS defended passionately and didn’t allow any real scoring opportunities against the second-best offense in the league.

Ultimately, the team couldn’t reward themselves for a great second half, but they can live with the performance and the point win, as Högner also confirmed.

“If someone had told me before the game that we would get a point in Leverkusen, I would have signed it straight away. But if you look at the 90 minutes now, then you have to say very clearly that we clearly did, especially in the second half “We were a better team,” said SGS coach Högner.

The Rise of Alejandro Grimaldo: Leverkusen’s Secret Hero

The Rise of Alejandro Grimaldo: Leverkusen’s Secret Hero

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Leroy Sané’s reaction to Alejandro Grimaldo’s free kick spoke volumes.

When the Spaniard, playing for Bayer Leverkusen, stroked the ball over the Bayern wall into the corner, the Munich offensive man flicked his hand in recognition. In the end, the German record champions drew 2-2 in front of their home crowd with the Werkself, who had lived up to their praise as supposedly FCB’s worst rivals this season.

After seven match days, the Rhinelanders are leading the Bundesliga table, with long-term dominant Bayern in third place, two points behind. It is no coincidence that Bayer 04 recently celebrated the best start to the season in the club’s history and is receiving exuberant praise from all sides: coach Xabi Alonso got involved in terms of transfers in the summer and put together a first-class squad together with sports director Simon Rolfes.

Grimaldo with the next dream free kick

A few weeks later at Mainz 05, Grimaldo proved that his goal in Munich was no coincidence by once again putting a dead ball in the box. But Grimaldo is much more than a standard specialist.

As a left-wing player, the Spaniard is predestined for Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 system. Grimaldo repeatedly initiates dangerous attacks from the wing, sometimes moving into the center and becoming an essential part of Leverkusen’s passing machine. In addition to the goals he has already outlined, the former Lisbon player has already contributed five assists in competitive games. Top value at Bayer.

In the comfortable 3-0 win against their neighbors from Cologne, Grimaldo played a decisive role in two of three goals – and played his way into the hearts of Bayer fans with his outstanding derby performance: “The atmosphere was unbelievable! Especially when we arrived,” Grimaldo enthused afterwards. “It was comparable to the city duels in Lisbon that I experienced with Benfica against Sporting.” Grimaldo obviously doesn’t just know how to win over his own followers on the field.

Basically, he was sure “before the first game” that Leverkusen had a good team. “With the other new additions, those responsible at the club have also implemented their promise from my contract talks in May to further strengthen the squad,” said Grimaldo during a media round. In addition to the other high-quality newcomers, Alonso’s charisma was the decisive factor in the move to Germany.

“In fact, there were several offers on the table from different countries,” revealed Grimaldo shortly after his arrival in the city of colors. “But ultimately, Xabi Alonso was the most important factor that made the difference for Leverkusen. I wanted to be coached by him.”

The appreciation is mutual, Alonso is a huge fan of his new winger, who was trained in FC Barcelona’s famous youth department. “Players like Alejandro Grimaldo have significantly improved our quality of play,” praised the world and European champion.

“He has that quality of making the final pass, can take good free kicks and is very professional.” It is not new that Grimaldo has impressive skills: for eight years he was one of the top performers at Benfica and also made a name for himself in the Champions League.

Grimaldo is waiting for his Spanish debut

It is all the more astonishing that he has not received a single nomination for the Spanish senior national team to date. A circumstance that Alonso recently took as an opportunity to make a recommendation to Spain coach Luis de la Fuente. “I can’t explain why he hasn’t played for Spain yet,” Alonso said of his compatriot. “Grimaldo would totally deserve it if he were invited. He plays great for us and also in recent years at Benfica.”

But Grimaldo waited in vain for a call-up to Furia Roja in the run-up to the current international break. “He’s not in the Spanish squad again. Unfortunately,” said the disappointed Alonso. Rolfes added: “I don’t know if they are all that good (at Spain, editor). Either way, for me he is a player who has to be a national team player – even for a top nation.”

Grimaldo himself is combative: “A few years ago I would probably have been angry about it,” he said. “Now it’s no longer like that – on the contrary: it motivates me even more. I’ll keep working and then maybe it will work at some point.”

If Grimaldo continues to deliver anything like this, de la Fuente will not be able to avoid him. In any case, at Leverkusen they know what they have in their new guy, Grimaldo is the secret hero in a team that is currently functioning. Not just because of his picture-perfect free kicks.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Victory Over 1. FC Heidenheim: Bundesliga Match Recap

As of: September 25, 2023 00:00 a.m

Bayer 04 Leverkusen beat 1. FC Heidenheim at home, but were still unable to regain the top spot in the Bundesliga.

In the well-deserved 4-1 win, Victor Boniface (9th minute/74th), Jonas Hofmann (63rd) and Amine Adli (82nd) scored for the hosts, while Eren Dinkci (58th) equalized for Heidenheim. Despite the success, the “Werkself” slipped to second place in the Bundesliga table. FC Bayern Munich is to blame, having beaten VfL Bochum 7-0 on Saturday and now has the better goal difference. Both teams have 13 points. The newcomer from Heidenheim remains with four points and slipped to 13th place.

Heidenheim’s coach Schmidt: “Deserved defeat”

“It wasn’t easy. Maybe we could have scored the second goal a little earlier,” said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso on the ARD microphone: “But it was a good game with lots of chances for us.” Jonas Hofmann added: “After the equalizer, things can go in a different direction, but we continued to play very well.”

Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt thought the defeat was well deserved: “The victory for Leverkusen was well deserved. That’s a shelf that we can’t reach into.” Captain Patrick Mainka added: “Leverkusen has a team that plays really good football. I have huge respect for the way they play.”

Bayer dominant from the start

Bayer played dominantly from the start and was immediately there. The ball ran safely through their own ranks, half of the guests were literally besieged. Consequently, the score was 1-0 early on. Exequiel Palacios passed Victor Boniface in the penalty area, the striker turned around his opponent Tim Siersleben and beat Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Müller with a shot into the right corner from 13 meters.

The Leverkusen team stuck with it, Heidenheim didn’t get into the game at all and ran after the ball and the opponent. In the style of a handball team, coach Alonso’s team played around the Heidenheim penalty area and looked for the gap. Most of the time the guests didn’t even get into the duels.

Leverkusen is completely superior

The next big chance came in the 25th minute. Jeremie Frimpong prevailed strongly against Siersleben on the right side of the penalty area and shot hard at the near post from a tight angle. But Kevin Müller had his fists up. A little later, the goalkeeper also parried a volley from Jonas Hofmann from the edge of the penalty area. But the 2-0 score, which was long overdue at this point, didn’t happen. In the 40th minute, Florian Wirtz had a completely free shot from 13 meters, but the ball was deflected.

The guests only showed their first signs of life offensively in the 44th minute. Eren Dinkçi beat three Leverkusen players with a strong dribble, but his cross pass to Kleindienst was too imprecise so he couldn’t control it.

The Heidenheimers also survived the somewhat wild final phase of the first half. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Boniface beat Patrick Mainka in the penalty area with a shot in the leg, appeared alone in front of Müller, but could not get the ball past the strongly reacting keeper.

Heidenheim counters and scores

At the start of the second half, Heidenheim almost turned the game on its head. Bayer’s Edmond Tapsoba lost the ball to Nikola Dovedan at the back. He then immediately went up and away towards the goal, but was caught again at the last moment by Tapsoba. Shortly afterwards, the next counterattack: This time Eren Dinkci was sent on his way and was stopped by Frimpong just before the edge of the penalty area.

Meanwhile, the Leverkusen team continued to have more of the game, but were no longer as compelling as in the first half because the Heidenheim team blocked the spaces more consistently. Consequently, the equalizer fell. Siersleben won a header duel against Hofmann with a questionably hard effort and then things happened quickly. Jan-Niklas Beste moved in from the left, crossed to Dinkci at penalty area level and hit the ball flat into the right corner from 15 meters.

Leverkusen only shakes briefly

Leverkusen shook themselves and it only took five minutes to respond. Palacios grabbed the ball in midfield and played a beautiful through ball over 30 meters to Hofmann, who didn’t miss this opportunity in front of Müller.

And Leverkusen followed up. Lennard Maloney brought down Álex Grimaldo in the penalty area in the 73rd minute, referee Christian Dingert awarded a penalty after the VAR indicated, which Boniface safely converted.

Anyone who expected that the “Werkself” could shift down a gear was disappointed. Boniface asserted himself strongly on the edge of the penalty area and then slammed the ball to the left wing post from 18 meters. And then the score was 4:1. Alex Grimaldo played a wonderful ball into the path of Amine Adli on the left side and he then made it ice cold and lobbed the ball over Müller as he rushed out of his goal. It was the final point in a game in which the promoted side was clearly shown its limits.

Bayer in Mainz, Heidenheim against Union

On matchday 6, Leverkusen travels to Mainz (Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 3:30 p.m.). Heidenheim is then challenged at home against Union Berlin.

Recap of Bundesliga Matches: Mönchengladbach’s Defensive Struggles, Leverkusen’s Impressive Play, and Heidenheim’s Historic Win

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 18, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Let’s start with Mönchengladbach. They lost only one point in three rounds and now they were losing 0:3 at Darmstadt after half time. The defense in particular is pathetic, they get an awful lot of easy goals, they are terribly lax around the penalty box. The tightening was crazy.

After the break, Tomáš Čvančara jumped in and initially missed the penalty, but then assisted on the goal. I liked that he kept his cool and in the end he equalized with a beautiful shot to make it 3-3. It would have been completely crazy if they turned the match around, but they didn’t. Apparently mixed feelings for Gladbach. On the one hand, they showed character, but the defense is really something to think about. Twelve goals conceded in four rounds is an awful lot.

Čvančara went into the second half with the intention that something should be done with the result. You could see that he really wanted to, that’s why he took the penalty. Maybe that’s why he didn’t end up kicking her the way he wanted, it seemed loosely played. But he has points, he fulfilled his role. This is extremely important for an attacker.

Friday saw a clash between the top two teams in the table and I have to say that Bayern’s clash with Leverkusen was fantastic. Mainly from the guests. I was curious if they would continue the active way of playing with short passes and quick transitions forward. Coach Xabi Alonso has put the team together incredibly, in some ways he reminds me of Pep Guardiola during his time at Bayern. The players have to enjoy it.

In the context of the entire match, Leverkusen was better for me in terms of play, even though they lost twice. At Bayern, I don’t see systemic things when scoring goals, it is often solely the work of individuals. At Leverkusen, you can see a handwriting with clear principles, which I like very much. They tied the game at 2:2 thanks to a penalty in the set-up, but the home team’s win would not have been deserved. Leverkusen was more football.

The newcomer from Heidenheim celebrates his first ever win in the Bundesliga after a 4:2 win over Bremen. I was surprised by such a high score, Bremen was well organized defensively. Heidenheim apparently got a kick out of how he was able to equalize the duel at Dortmund. It can be seen that he has to be reckoned with, he scored beautiful goals after nice actions.

At the same time, coach Frank Schmidt broke the record for the longest tenure at one German club. He has been Heidenheim’s coach for 5,845 days since 2007, on Sunday he overtook Volker Finke, who led Freiburg from 1991 to 2007. He is a huge one, hats off. He certainly didn’t have a very big budget, but he repeatedly reached for promotion to the elite and last season they succeeded. Deservedly, although at the expense of Hamburg, I’m not too happy about it. It is not easy to be in one club for so long and to constantly look for new and new motivation. They are improving, they are still adding to the squad in modest conditions.

I must also mention that Eren Dinkci scored two goals in the historic win, who is in Heidenheim on loan from Bremen. The only good thing is that in Germany the rule is set like this. Here it works the other way around and a player cannot start against the parent team. The clubs defend themselves by paying the players at least in part. But why? There aren’t that many matches in the season, and this way they will prepare the given football player by two more. Nobody solved it, that’s probably the main difference.

And we mustn’t forget Stuttgart forward Serho Guirassy. I noticed him already in the spring, when he started to be seen a lot and helped Stuttgart a lot to save. A fantastic and disgusting striker, he has now scored another hat-trick and is the competition’s top scorer with eight goals. Stuttgart is driving, it is productive and this fighter helps them a lot. Great individually, fast and uncompromising in the box.

16 years ago today, Frank Schimdt was appointed Heidenheim coach. He not only took the club from the Oberliga (5th tier) to the Bundesliga, but also became the longest-serving coach in German professional football, overtaking Freiburg‘s Volker Finke.

Incredible achievements 👏 pic.twitter.com/vCtqXZi4dK

— 🌕 Bayernculture | 🔴⚪️ (@Juppology) September 17, 2023

Forwards in general have been doing well since the start of the season. Harry Kane and Victor Boniface have four goals, Jonas Wind from Wolfsburg even five. I’m curious to see how everyone and especially Guirassy will continue to do. Stuttgart have changed their formation and style of play since coach Sebastian Hoeness took over. Overall, he is productive, fourteen goals in four games is a great record.
