Eintracht Frankfurt secures sixth place in Bundesliga after beating Hoffenheim 3-1 and Hoffenheim’s struggles continue

Leverkusen’s match was made easier by the suspension of stopper Moritz Jenz, who received a second yellow card already in the 28th minute. Nathan Tella used the numerical advantage in the first half and Florian Wirtz sealed the victory in the end.

Leverkusen is still undefeated this season and its streak has stretched to 36 games, and it also won against Wolfsburg at home for the first time since 2016. The guests, on the other hand, have dragged out their wait for a victory, the last time they got three points in the Bundesliga was in mid-December.

Frankfurt beat Hoffenheim 3-1 and secured sixth place in the table, which is the last place to participate in European cups. The visiting team made his way to points much easier, as they finished the match without two suspended players.

Hoffenheim, for whom David Jurásek only got into the game after the break, took the lead in the sixth minute. But then John Brooks received a red card and Frankfurt used the numerical advantage to turn around. In the 78th minute, the guests also lost Ozan Kabak after a second yellow card.

Frankfurt scored important points in the battle for the cups, as they leapfrogged seventh-placed Hoffenheim seven points behind in sixth place. It’s the same for seventh-placed Freiburg, who succeeded today in Bochum (2:1) and achieved their first victory after six rounds.

They are taking to the streets against the AfD and they want to prevent the DFL deal with investors. However, not everyone likes the fact that the fans are taking a stand. The 20th matchday

After all, the winner of the match day: Union Berlin.

The Sunday games in Italy, Spain, England. You also have to broaden your horizons and see what’s going on with your European neighbors. Arsenal played Liverpool at 5:30 p.m. At times Arsenal took Jürgen Klopp’s team apart quite a bit, in the second half Liverpool handed out gifts: 3-1 to Arsenal. In the Premier League there is now a spectacular three-way battle for the championship between the two and Man City. In the evening, Real played against Atlético (the guests equalized in the 93rd minute) and Inter played against Juve. The Milanese won this Derby d’Italia and have four points more than the Turin team (from one game less). Dazn showed the two games plus Olympique Lyon against Olympique Marseille in an international three-way conference. If you wanted, you could also waste your Sunday at Wolfsburg against Hoffenheim and Leipzig against Union.

Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin 13th Round Play-off: Guerreiro’s Goal Decides Snow-Postponed Game

Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin 13th Round Play-off: Guerreiro’s Goal Decides Snow-Postponed Game

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 24, 2024

The game, which was postponed due to the snow disaster at the beginning of December, was decided today by Guerreiro’s only goal at the beginning of the second half. The Portuguese defender sent the ball into the net after England Gunner Kane’s shot hit the post. Kane then got the ball into the goal, but due to offside his shot was disallowed, so the best scorer of the competition has to wait for the 23rd goal.

Union finished the match without suspended coach Bjelici, who received a red card in the 74th minute for a scuffle with Sané on the touchline.

The midfielder of the Berlin team, Alex Král, who went to Munich to watch the new national team coach Ivan Hašek, played 78 minutes. His team is three points away from the relegation zone and the play-off spot.

Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen Stays Unbeaten with Dramatic Win Over Leipzig

Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen Stays Unbeaten with Dramatic Win Over Leipzig

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 21, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

“It was a very intense match, anything could have happened. We are very pleased that we were able to score the third goal in the end and win,” said coach Xabi Alonso.

Leverkusen defended their unbeaten league record at the home of the fourth Bundesliga team. On the pitch where the Czech national team will play Euro 2024 against Portugal in June. And Bayer did not succeed in the first half. He was losing 0:1, the home team were clearly better and more active. In addition, Alonso had to replace right wingback Jeremie Frimpong due to injury.

Stoppers Odilon Kossounou and Edmond Tapsoba are still missing due to participation in the African Cup of Nations. But in the end it was the men from the back rows who decided. Nathan Tella, who replaced Frimpong, equalized at 1:1, central defender Jonathan Tah netted the goal to make it 2:2, and his partner from the stopper trio, Piero Hincapie, decided in the set-up. Let us remind you that last weekend Leverkusen won 1:0 in Augsburg thanks to a goal in the 94th minute.

“The goals we conceded were not very important for me. I still believed we could win the match,” claimed Alonso. “All in all, great football. We started well, but Leverkusen deserved three points in the second half,” admitted Leipzig coach Marco Rose.

“We were in control of the game, but if we concede three goals, we can’t be surprised to lose. I’m terribly angry,” the experienced full-back of the home team, David Raum, was relieved.

Even three Czechs can celebrate. Patrik Schick appeared in the starting line-up at the tip of the attack, he got into several promising positions, but in the end he did not register in the statistics. Already at 3:2, he was making a substitution in the set-up, Adam Hložek ran onto the pitch in his place. Goalkeeper Matěj Kovář, who catches mostly cups this season, remained among the substitutes.

Before Sunday’s games, Leverkusen leads the league by seven points, but second-placed Bayern Munich has two games less. Xabi Alonso’s men are still unbeaten, they managed to win fifteen times and draw three times from 18 matches.

Patrik Schick Returns to Form with Leverkusen: High Hopes for Bundesliga Season

Patrik Schick Returns to Form with Leverkusen: High Hopes for Bundesliga Season

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 13, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Schick’s mood will significantly affect Leverkusen’s ambitions. The second best scorer in the Bundesliga from the 2021/2022 season spent most of the fall recuperating after groin surgery. After that, he also suffered from a muscle problem with his calf, but by the end of the autumn, he flew in with tremendous enthusiasm and closed it with a hat-trick against Bochum. Before that, he scored twice in the Europa League and once in the German Cup.

“It is clear that Bayer currently has high hopes for Schick. He is in good shape,” Phillip Arens, a journalist from Bild daily, who closely follows the events surrounding Leverkusen, tells Sport.cz. “We have to realize that Patrik was injured for a long time, but on the other hand, he is a different person now. He even gives interviews in German, he laughs more. The operation was such a relief for him, even though he had other minor health problems. If he plays like he did at the end of autumn, he will score a lot more goals for Leverkusen,” said the German journalist.

“He is ready to play the full ninety minutes. He trained well during December, also completed everything in the last two weeks. He didn’t miss a single minute. He is ready,” said coach Xabi Alonso on Friday.

What about Adam Hložek? The 21-year-old native of Ivančice had a hard time getting into the lineup in the fall, he collected barks in the Bundesliga, although he started in it thirteen times, but played only 81 minutes in total and was enough to score against Darmstadt. He got more space in the cups, in which he scored five goals. In a way, it pays for its versatility and also for the fact that competitors have done well. He scored twice in a recent friendly against Venice.

“However, I think his position is improving. It’s true that he hasn’t started in the Bundesliga this season, but I’d say he won’t be waiting much longer. He is training well, I expect to see more of him,” Arens concluded. “He’s gaining confidence, he has a good shot, he can be a bigger competitor for Jonas Hofmann. A good opportunity is coming for him to start next to Florian Wirtz under the striker,” added the German journalist to his view.

Leverkusen will have to deal with the absence of important players who have already left for the Africa Cup in the coming weeks. It features offensive tackle Amine Adli (Morocco) and defenders Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso) and Odilon Kossounou (Côte d’Ivoire). The gunner Boniface is injured in this.

Matěj Kovář is extremely satisfied in Leverkusen. Patrik Schick has already given him a few goals in training Video: Sport.cz, FAČR

“On the one hand, it’s a shame for Bayer that these players are missing, on the other hand, it’s a chance for others. Coach Xabi Alonso reiterates that everyone in his team is important and everyone gets an opportunity. In addition, Leverkusen’s squad offers a lot of options, it is flexible, it can play with three stoppers or four defenders,” noted former Bayer striker Patrick Helmes for the Kicker magazine website.

Reinforcements are not coming yet. The current leader of the Bundesliga will miss Boniface due to a groin injury until the beginning of April. “Now he would be missing anyway because of the African Cup,” noted the club’s sporting director Simon Rolfes. “It’s unpleasant for us and for him, but that’s just the way it is. We didn’t have many injured in the fall, this can happen,” added the former Leverkusen midfielder.

He also points to Hložka. “He’s gotten better over the last few months,” Rolfes confirmed Arens’ words. The Czech representative can play from the wing, under the point, in the past he also appeared in the lineup as a striker, but more in the role of a “false nine”, i.e. a player who moved a lot lower, thus opening up space for the wings. However, Leverkusen now plays in a slightly different style. “Adam can play in this position (striker),” agreed Xabi Alonso.

So far, there is no indication that Leverkusen will arm themselves with a new attacking player during the winter. Rolfes admits that he is looking at the market, while ruling out an emergency solution. “We’re not under any pressure to bring anyone in. But if there is a good opportunity to get someone and it would be logical, then we can react,” said the coach.

“It’s open. If anyone else gets injured, the club should act immediately. But in addition to Patrik, Adam is available, who certainly represents an alternative to the attack. Anyway, I don’t think a pure striker will come. When Boniface recovers, there would be three, and that would be a bit much. We’ll see how Leverkusen starts, but he’s ready,” announced Arens.

Bundesliga, 12th matchday – Saturday: VfB Stuttgart wins against Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt – VfB Stuttgart 1:2 (1:2)

VfB Stuttgart has stopped Eintracht Frankfurt’s winning streak and is still in third place in the table. Frankfurt had to admit defeat with a score of 1:2 (1:2). Deniz Undav scored twice for VfB (1st/45th + 1 minute). Stuttgart’s Waldemar Anton (26th) scored an own goal to equalize for the Hessians.

Eintracht Frankfurt had not lost eight competitive games in a row. With 18 points, Eintracht remains in seventh place. In the second half, Stuttgart earned the lead again as they were the more active team. Eintracht lacked creativity and impact.

Serhou Guirassy could have increased the score for the guests in the final phase, but he missed his 16th goal of the season by a few centimeters.

Borussia Dortmund – Borussia Mönchengladbach 4:2 (3:2)

Borussia Dortmund is 4:2 (3:2) against Borussia Mönchengladbach temporarily in fourth place in the table. Even an early 0-2 deficit thanks to goals from Rocco Reitz (13′) and Manu Koné (28′) didn’t upset BVB.

Marcel Sabitzer (30th), Niclas Füllkrug (32nd), Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (45th) and Donyell Malen (90th + 7) scored for Dortmund. The upward trend for Mönchengladbach has therefore ended. After four competitive games without defeat, Gladbach went into Dortmund empty – as in the last ten games against BVB.

The early deficit initially caused problems for BVB. However, after Koné’s goal, Dortmund reacted and were able to make up the deficit within three minutes.

SC Freiburg – SV Darmstadt 98 1:1 (1:1)

The winless streaks of SC Freiburg and SV Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga continue on matchday 12. With the score 1-1 (1-1), Freiburg missed out on a win for the fourth time in a row – returnee Torsten Lieberknecht’s team is waiting a game longer for a sense of success.

The guests took the lead through Mathias Honsak after 18 minutes. Lucas Höler (35th) secured at least one point for Europa League participants Freiburg. Despite their clear superiority, the SC failed to take advantage of opportunities. Even after the break, the action mostly took place in Hesse’s half. Coach Christian Streich called for more breadth in his team’s offensive game. However, the SC found it difficult to implement this.

1. FC Union Berlin – FC Augsburg 1:1 (0:1)

1. FC Union Berlin has ended its series of defeats in the Bundesliga under the interim coaching duo Marco Grote and Marie-Louise Eta – but they are still missing their first win since August. In the first game after the end of coach Urs Fischer’s era, the Berliners drew 1-1 (0-1) from FC Augsburg.

Ermedin Demirović had given the guests the lead (39’/foul penalty). Robin Knoche missed a penalty for Berlin (58th). Kevin Volland secured the draw late with his first goal for Union (88th minute).

The Berliners left bottom of the table by winning their first point after nine league defeats in a row, but have now not achieved a win in 15 games.

VfL Wolfsburg – RB Leipzig 2:1 (1:0)

RB Leipzig lost to VfL Wolfsburg for the second time in four weeks. Wolfsburg won 2-1 (1-0) and thus pushed Leipzig out of the Champions League places. VfL took the lead early: Jonas Wind scored 1-0 in the 9th minute. But just 14 minutes after Yussuf Poulsen’s equalizer (52′), Rogério (66′) made it 2-1 for Wolfsburg.

For Wolfsburg, this ended a negative series of five Bundesliga games without a win. The team showed a very committed and sometimes passionate performance against Leipzig. The players threw themselves into every shot on goal and fought duels with great physical effort. Nevertheless, RB Leipzig was superior in terms of speed, technique and game system for large parts – but was hardly able to take advantage of any chances.

Werder Bremen – Bayer 04 Leverkusen 0:3 (0:2)

Werder Bremen lost 0:3 (0:2) against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. This means Leverkusen could retake the lead from Bayern Munich after just one day. An own goal from Bremen’s Olivier Deman (9th minute) after a cross from Jonas Hofmann and a goal from Jeremie Frimpong (43rd) steered Bayer Leverkusen to their eleventh win in their twelfth league game of the season before the break. In the second half, Alejandro Grimaldo (76th) scored the final point.

However, after three games without defeat, Bremen suffered a not unexpected setback with a total of five points. The guests let Bremen come in the first few minutes, but then took more and more control with their class. Despite a good performance, Werder was never able to stop the high-flyers from Leverkusen.

The Friday game between 1. FC Cologne and Bayern Munich had previously ended 0-1 (0-1).
