COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) – A domestic violence incident on Saturday afternoon triggered a prolonged standoff in the 800 block of Gilbert Street, involving a 19-year-old suspect and Columbus police officers. the situation unfolded after a series of escalating 911 calls.
Initial Reports and Escalation
At approximately 2:30 p.m., Columbus police received a call reporting a woman had been choked by her brother. Disturbingly, the suspect could be overheard during the call, stating, “Come get me I got something for you all,” according to authorities.
While officers were en route to the scene, a second, more alarming call came in: the brother had allegedly shot his sister. This instantly elevated the urgency and potential danger of the situation.
Upon arriving at the residence, officers initially entered the home to search for the female victim, only to learn she had already been transported to a nearby hospital by a family member.
Barricade and SWAT Deployment
The suspect, later identified as Nathen Thorn, refused to cooperate with officers and barricaded himself upstairs. He afterward discharged multiple rounds at the responding officers, prompting at least one officer to return fire.
Given the active threat, the Columbus Division of Police deployed it’s SWAT team and crisis negotiators to the scene. For several hours, officers attempted to establish communication with Thorn, aiming for a peaceful resolution.
Negotiators successfully convinced Thorn to surrender peacefully at approximately 3:30 p.m., bringing an end to the tense standoff.
Injuries and Charges
Fortunately, Thorn was unharmed during the incident. However, one Columbus police officer sustained a minor injury and received treatment at a local hospital before being released.
The female victim, an adult, underwent surgery and is currently listed in stable condition. Her identity has not been released at this time.
Thorn is expected to face at least one charge of felonious assault.Further charges might potentially be filed as the investigation progresses.
Columbus Division of Police’s Major Crimes Investigation Team is currently investigating the police-involved shooting aspect of the incident.
