DOJ Delays ‘Sabungero’ Case Hearing Pending Evidence, Ang and Barretto Deny Allegations
MANILA – Proceedings in the Department of Justice (DOJ) examination into โtheโค disappearance of several “sabungeros” (cockfighting โคaficionados) have been stalled due to incomplete evidence, and both businessman Charlie “Atong”โ Ang and former Quezon City Representative sandra Errol Tulfo Barretto have โrefuted accusations leveled โagainst them.
Attorney Dennis Villareal, representing Ang, stated that a subpoena servedโ to them includedโ only two of sevenโ identified USBโค drives, with โthe remaining five represented only by photocopies โฃlacking the actual data. “How can we respond properly โฃif theโฃ evidenceโฃ itself is missing?” Villareal questioned. He also cited delays stemming from complainants recently submitting sworn affidavits, including whistleblower julie Patidongan.
Barretto’s lawyer,Almaโ Mallonga, dismissed the accusations โas “bare allegations”โข lacking substantiation, asserting,”Suspicions, rumors, and speculationsโค are not evidence. โThere’s no evidence in this โcase.” she expressed confidence the complaints wouldโ be dismissed.
Villareal further denied allegations that โขangโค attempted to settle โคrelated casesโ before the Manila Regionalโฃ Trial Court, noting Ang is not an โaccused inโค those โฃproceedings. He pointed outโ that Patidongan and her co-accused, not Ang, are the defendantsโ in those cases, and suggested the accused โhave a motive to settle, particularly after Patidongan’s bail โwas โขreversed. “Why โฃwould Ang attempt to โsettle when he is not even charged? โItโฃ is โขindeedโ theโข accused who stand to benefit fromโข any compromise,” Villareal stated.
Villareal โwarned that reopening the case could undermine years ofโฃ proceedings as the complaints were first filed in 2022, โขalleging โฃattempts to implicateโข Ang are a tactic to deflectโข from the wrongdoing of those actually facing charges.
Prosecutor Charlieโ Guhit confirmed that only Barretto has submitted โa counter-affidavit and that theโฃ DOJ โฃhas ordered the โฃPhilippine National Police (PNP) to submit the missing USB drives โbefore the nextโฃ hearing on September 29. The prosecution panel will not compel respondentsโฃ to file counter-affidavits until the evidence is complete.
The disappearance of theโ “sabungeros” remains unresolved after more than three years,โค with families continuing toโ seek justice โฃas the case remains inโ the preliminary investigation phase.
