Saquon Barkley Requestedโข Tradeโค From Giants Before 2023 Season, Documentary Reveals
New details emerged from an upcoming documentary revealing that New York โGiants running backโข saquon Barkley requested a trade from the team prior to the 2023 season, frustrated withโ contract negotiations. The โdocumentary, filmed over five years, chronicles Barkley’s career from โhis ACL tear in 2020 through his Super Bowl โvictory with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Barkley’s discontent stemmed from a perceived lack of โthankfulness from the Giants’ โfrontโค office during contract talks. Despite rushingโ for 1,312 yards in 2022โฃ – the second-highest total of his career – Barkley felt undervalued.โค “They โreally don’t appreciate me,โค to be wholly honest,” Barkleyโฃ said afterโค aโ win overโข the Houston Texans. He later โขstated he would have signed for between $10 million adn $11 million annually “if they had operated a whole different way.”
The documentary details a Giants offer of $11.5 million per season and $23 โคmillion guaranteed before aโ July 2023 deadline. Barkley ultimately signed a โคthree-year, โ$37 million deal with the โEagles, including $26 million guaranteed.
Giants owner John Mara acknowledged the team’s regret in losing Barkley, texting โhim after he signed with Philadelphia: “I am sickโฃ about losingโค you. โคbut I understand and โขrespect your decision. We appreciate everything you did forโ this franchise. You are a class act. Wish you and โyour familyโฃ nothing but โคthe best.”
Barkley played out the 2023 โขseason with โคthe Giants, rushing for 962 yards in 14 โฃgames as the team finished 6-11. The giants declined to use the franchise tag on him for a second consecutive year. In his first season with the Eagles, Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards, won a Super Bowl, and was named NFL Offensive Player of the โYear.
The documentary also showcases Barkley’s โrecovery from his ACL injury and his journey into fatherhood.
