Barcelona President Joan Laporta addressed former managerโ Xavi Hernรกndez’sโ public support of presidential candidateโ Victorโ Font, stating he wasn’t surprised by โขthe endorsement givenโ their past relationship. The comments come as โthe club preparesโ for upcoming โpresidential elections.
Laportaโ acknowledged Xavi’s freedom to supportโ whomever heโ chooses, telling RAC1,”I wasn’t surprised that Xavi was there and I thought he was free to do whatever he wants. I’m not surprised because in the past he had a relationship withโ Victor Font.” He further stated โthat all Barcelona fans are free to supportโฃ the โcandidateโ of their choice, adding,โ “All โBarรงaโฃ fans can do what they think is appropriate. We’re not inโ the middle of anโฃ election campaignโ yet, so I won’t commentโค on everything.”
The president also responded to criticism leveled against those he termed “mestretites” โ(know-it-alls), clarifying that the โremark wasn’t directed at any specific individual. “When I saeid ‘mestretites,’ I didn’t specify names or positions. It was a warning to all those who see Barcelona โขsolely โคas a business, because โขthose who see it that way haveโ the โขconcept of โa limited company in โmind. If he felt โtargeted, there mustโฃ be a reason.”
Laportaโ confirmed the elections will be held between March 15 and June 15, with a firm date to be announced soon. He expressed a desire to minimize disruption toโ the team during the election โperiod, stating, “We will decide as soon as possible and weโ hope that they hinder โthe team as little as possible.”
