Krejčíková Advances in Australian Open as Sára Bejlek Falls in Opening Round

Only Sára Bejlek failed on the opening day of the tournament in Melbourne. The seventeen-year-old player lost to the favored Canadian and the thirty-two seed Leylah Fernandez 6:7 and 2:6.

The 28-year-old Krejčíková defeated Hontamaová, the 122nd tennis player in the world, in two hours and 25 minutes. The defending champion of last year’s round of 16 succeeded despite 47 unforced errors. She recorded her first win of the season. “It was a tough match. Mai played very well and I, on the other hand, did not do well. But I still believed and I’m glad that I finally won,” said Krejčíková in an interview on the court.

Two-time Roland Garros 2021 winner Krejčíková lost four games in a row in the first set from 2-2 and Hontama took the lead. Also in the second set, the tennis player from Ivančice faced difficult moments. She made up for the lack of a break three times, but won three games in a row from 3:4, took advantage of the fourth set point and forced a decisive third set.

In it, with the score 3:2, Krejčíková requested a break to treat her right foot. The decisive moment came in the eighth game, when the Czech tennis player won another break and then used the first match point while serving.

“I mainly tried to stay in the game. I was losing in the second set, but I never give up. The first rounds are always difficult. I’m happy that I advanced and I’m looking forward to the next match,” added Krejčíková. In the 2nd round, she will face the German Tamara Korpatschová.

Brenda Fruhvirtová also lost the first set against Romanian Bogdanová. In the second set, however, the native of Prague equalized thanks to a break in the tenth game, and in the decisive act she escaped to a 5:1 lead after two more breaks. In the eighth game, she didn’t use four match points on Bogdanová’s serve, but then she didn’t hesitate on her own serve.

In the next round, Linda Fruhvirtová’s younger sister, who is two years younger, could meet the defending champion of Belarus, Aryna Sabalenkova. The world number two will face Germany’s Ella Seidel.

For the third time, Macháč advanced to the 2nd round of the first Grand Slam of the season. The 23-year-old native of Beroun defeated the world’s 138th player Močizuki in two and a half hours in three sets. He lost serve only once and saved six of seven break points. The Japanese paid for 54 unforced errors, the Czech tennis player made thirty fewer. Macháč will try to improve his Grand Slam record either against Frances Tiafoe from the USA or Croatian Born Čoric.

Seventeen-year-old Bejlek did not even pass the opening phase of the Grand Slam tournament on her fourth attempt. She was also eliminated in the 1st round at the US Open the year before, or at the Australian Open and Roland Garros last year. She had 17 game winners against Fernandez, but also made 22 unforced errors.

The young Czech tennis player, who made it to the main part of the qualification, lost her serve right at the beginning of the first set. Although she was able to make up for the lack of a break, she forced a shortened game, but in it she lost five balls on her own serve and lost the tie-break with a ratio of 5:7.

In the second set, Bejlek led 1:0 after her opponent’s service was broken, but she did not confirm the break and did not even win a game after the score was 2:2. 2021 US Open finalist Fernandez took advantage of Bejlek’s first match point after one hour and 36 minutes.

The Challenges and Disruptions for Tennis Players in the Billie Jean King Cup

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 23, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

“Actually, it’s the second Masters where the last qualified participant can aim for an awful lot of points, and the player right behind her can’t. It’s completely incomprehensible to me,” says Petr Pála, the Czech captain in the Billie Jean King Cup. In addition, this year’s plans can disrupt his plans even more due to the participation of Barbora Krejčíková.

She is playing in China this week in a group with Poland’s Linette and Russia’s Kasatkin. However, the Tournament of Champions starts already on Sunday in Cancún, 15 thousand kilometers away, where she is to compete with Kateřina Siniaková in doubles and, in addition, to be the second substitute for singles. And the very next week after the end of the competition in Mexico, the Czechs are to play in the final BJKC tournament, less than 8 thousand kilometers away in Seville. In what condition did Krejčíková and spol. will arrive, it is difficult to estimate.

In addition, Marie Bouzková (with the Spaniard Sorribesová) is to play doubles in China, whom Pála contacted just in case one of the players nominated for Sevilla was injured.

Since the US Open, the other two TM participants, Wimbledon winner Markéta Vondroušová (hand) and Roland Garros finalist Karolína Muchová (wrist), have basically not played. She flies to Cancun without properly training with the racket. The finalist from Hong Kong and the winner from Nanchang Siniaková has been competing with a bandaged left thigh for the last few weeks.

“The players fly left, right. The ITF and WTA are giving them terrible drops,” Pála complained.

“Our tennis players just have to hope that the other players are not much better off. However, none of the top female tennis players played the entire season without injury. Even better is the Belarusian Sabalenková, but she probably has muscles of steel,” noted Sport.cz expert Jan Kukal.

Some players therefore prefer to skip the Elite Trophy. Maria Sakkariová will rather fly straight to Mexico as a substitute. Petra Kvitová (winner from 2016) and Switzerland’s Belinda Bencicová also dropped the tournament from their schedule, announcing that she wanted to focus on the BJKC.

“It is basically impossible to play all the planned tournaments in a year,” admits Kukal.

It was not played in China, first because it was the focus of covid and then because of the scandal surrounding Peng Shuai, which accused the former vice-premier of forcing her to have sex, then canceled everything and stopped communicating completely for some time. However, the boycott did not succeed and the Chinese money began to disappear from the WTA.

Its boss Steve Simon thus resigned to ethical principles and opened his arms to China again. “We have come to the conclusion that we will never fully secure our goals and it will be our players and tournaments who will ultimately pay an extraordinary price for their sacrifices,” he said.

But the return behind the Chinese wall also means that the itinerary of the leading female tennis players at the end of the season thickened to unprecedented positions. In the case of Krejčíková, it is a complete extreme.

It will be a blue derby between Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Senego in the second round of the US Open tennis, which also includes Lucia Bronzetti.

On his debut in the 43rd edition of the New York hard court tournament in Flushing Meadows, the 22-year-old South Tyrolean number 6 in the world eliminated the 31-year-old German Yannick Hanfmann (n. 54) in 6-3 6-1 6-1, while the 28-year-old Piedmontese n. 39 of the ATP ranking beat the 26-year-old American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran 6-3 6-4 6-2.

The 24-year-old Rimini n. 76 in WTA instead eliminated in the first round with a score of 6-4 7-6(7/3) the number 12 in the world, the 27-year-old Czech Barbora Krejcikova. Bronzetti’s next opponent is the 21-year-old German Eva Lys (n.143).

Czech Tennis Player Barbora Krejčíková Eliminated in 1st Round of Cleveland Tournament

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 21, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

After Cincinnati, Barbora Krejčíková did not succeed in the next preparatory tournament before the US Open in Cleveland. The second-seeded Czech tennis player was surprisingly eliminated in the 1st round today after losing 4:6, 1:6 to Denmark’s Clara Tauson. Linda Fruhvirtová and Kateřina Siniaková also dropped out.

World number 12 Krejčíková is still waiting for her first win since the beginning of July, when she had to withdraw from the Wimbledon second round match against Russian Mirra Andrejeva due to an ankle injury.

Because of this, she missed the tournament in Prague and returned to the courts only last week.

In Cincinnati, the previous year’s Roland Garros winner lost in the 1st round to former world number one Viktoria Azarenkova from Belarus.

At the next tournament in Ohio in Cleveland today, she was not good enough for the 90th ranked player Tauson. She didn’t even succeed in the qualification, but went to the main competition as a “lucky loser”.

Favored Krejčíková led 4:2 in the first set after a successful break, but since then she has played only one game…

Not even world number one in doubles Siniakov hasn’t won since Wimbledon, and she already has five defeats in a row.

In the second set of the match against Sorribes, she took time for treatment, and although she tried to continue after that, she gave up the duel shortly after at the score of 2:6, 0:4.

Eighteen-year-old Fruhvirtová did not end her long unsuccessful streak either, as world number seven and tournament number one Caroline Garcia inflicted her sixth defeat in a row with a score of 3:6, 2:6. The talented Czech tennis player last won two months ago in the qualification in Eastbourne.

The tournament in Cleveland will therefore continue without the Czech participation in the singles match, Linda Nosková was already eliminated in the first round on Sunday. The US Open starts in a week.

Cleveland Women’s Tennis Tournament (hard court, $271,363 endowment):

Singles – 1st round: Tausonová (Den.) – Krejčíková (2-CR) 6:4, 6:1, Garcia (1-Fr.) – L. Fruhvirtová (Czech Republic) 6:3, 6:2, Sorribesová (Sp.) – Siniakova (Czech Republic) 6:2, 4:0 scratch, Paoliniová (11-It.) – Frechová (Pol.) 6:1, 6:3, Stearnsová (USA) – Trevisanová (It.) 6:1, 4:5 scratch, Grabherová (Austria) – Wang Si-yü (China) 6:3, 6:4, Sasnovičová (Belarus) – Navarro (USA) 3:6, 6:4, 7:5, Wang Sin-yü ( China) – Burelová (Fr.) 7:6 (7:5), 4:6, 7:5.

Rising Tennis Star Mirra Andrejevová Makes Waves at Wimbledon: Follow Her Journey and Netflix Documentary

She has only a few months of her adult career behind her, yet tennis player Mirra Andrejevová is making waves on the circuit. The Siberian teenager made it through the Wimbledon qualifiers and is already in the third round, which she reached over the injured Barbora Krejčíková.

London (from our correspondent) – Mirra Andrejeva is followed at every step of the All England Club by the cameras of the streaming giant Netflix.

For the next season, the documentarians creating the series Break Point obviously bet on the story of the only sixteen-year-old Russian prodigy.

They can’t be surprised.

Andrejevová has an unbelievable record of 27 wins out of 30 duels this year. She got excited in Madrid, at Roland Garros, and now she has the famous Wimbledon around her finger with her tennis and outgoing demeanor.

Just like in Paris, the girl from Krasnoyarsk, a million-strong city located on the Yenisei River and the Trans-Siberian highway, flew through the qualifying grid and on the grass courts. And just like in Paris, she has already reached the third round.

On Thursday, the Czech favorite Barbora Krejčíková scratched her match due to an ankle injury at the score of 3:6, 0:4.

Both tennis players took turns in the press center shortly after each other. While the Czech could not hold back tears and struggled to find words, the young Russian beamed with happiness, even though she began her speech by pitying her opponent.

“Of course, I am very happy for the win, but this is not the way I would like to win. She had problems with her leg, I wish her a speedy recovery. I saw how hard she is having moments,” stated Andrejevová

Despite Krejčíková’s indisposition, her level of tennis impressed again. Especially when it is her first grass tournament in her life. In the first round of qualification, she played her first match on grass here.

“In the first days it was difficult for me to find a rhythm. And now it’s not bad,” she said, and pleasantly struck a patriotic chord with the British.

“Compared to the French Open, it’s beautiful here. Just wow. So traditional. The French Open is kind of ordinary, but here it’s white clothes, green grass, strawberries. I like Wimbledon a lot more,” she laughed.

She also spoke about Netflix’s interest. “They’re following me. They’re probably around here somewhere, I don’t know,” she looked around the room.

“But they’re really nice people. They don’t want anything bad for me. If I don’t want to be filmed that day, they’re fine with it. Like just yesterday, I was very nervous and felt uncomfortable and stressed. They just left and gave me space ,” Andrejevová said.

Her platonic “romance” with Andy Murray also continues.

It started already in Madrid, where the Russian broke down the presenters of the Tennis Channel, when in an interview she admired Murray’s “beautiful face”, which she saw live for the first time.

The 36-year-old British champion jokingly responded on Twitter: “Imagine how good she’ll be when she gets her eyes done.”

In Paris, she subsequently revealed that she is already in direct telephone contact with her role model. They congratulated each other on their tennis successes.

Now journalists asked about the development again. “I met him here. But I’m too shy to talk to him. When I see him, I try to hide quickly and leave the area in a flash, just so I don’t have to talk to him,” laughed the 102nd ranked player in the world.

She will challenge compatriot Anastasia Potapova in the third round of Wimbledon on Saturday.

Czech Tennis Players’ Performances at Wimbledon: Siniaková, Nosková, and Muchová’s Matches

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 6, 2023

Tennis player Kateřina Siniaková did not advance to the 3rd round of Wimbledon. The winner of the recent tournament in Bad Homburg lost a duel with Ukrainian Lesja Curenko in one hour and 26 minutes 4:6, 1:6. Debutant Linda Nosková failed in the 1st round, losing to Hungarian Dalma Gálfiová 7:6. 2:6 and 2:6, nor Roland Garros finalist Karolína Muchová. She fell after losing to German Jule Niemeier 4:6, 7:5, 1:6.

World number 32 Siniakov lost after six matches. At the All England Club, she failed to follow up on her triumph from the opening round, in which she knocked out the tournament’s twenty-fourth seed Cheng Qin-wen from China. Against Curenko, who also knocked out Barbora Krejčíková at Roland Garros a few weeks ago, she paid the price with 31 unforced errors.

The beginning of the duel was characterized by breaks. Both exchanged serve three times and Siniaková was able to come back from a 2:4 disadvantage. But in the important tenth game, she lost serve for the fourth time and the Ukrainian took the lead. In the second set, Curenková was 100 percent on serve, won two breaks and converted the second match point.

Eighteen-year-old Nosková was supposed to play against Gálfiová already on Tuesday, but the program was postponed by rain. The previous year’s winner of the junior Roland Garros had a well-played match with the 126th player in the world. She held serve in the first set and although she missed three set points at 6:5, she won three balls in a row from 5:6 in a dramatic shortened game.

The 24-year-old Hungarian improved after that. Nosková did not allow a single break point and turned the match around thanks to four breaks. She played 24 winning balls and took advantage of the second match point after less than two hours.

Karolína Muchová and Germany’s Jule Niemeier are also finishing the 1st round of Wimbledon from the Czech female tennis players today. Jiří Lehečka, Barbora Krejčíková, Markéta Vondroušová, Barbora Strýcová and Marie Bouzková will enter the 2nd round.

Tennis Wimbledon in London (grass, £44.7m endowment):

Men:

Singles – 1st round: Davidovich (31-Šp.) – Fils (Fr.) 7:6 (7:3), 6:1, 6.2, Carballés (Šp.) – Arnaldi (It.) 6:7 (0:7), 6: 3, 6:4, 6:4. 2nd round: Halys (Fr.) – Vukic (Aust.) 6:3, 6:1, 6:4, Bublik (23-Kaz.) – Wolf (USA) 6:3, 7:6 (7:5), 6: 0.

Women:

Singles – 1st round: Gálfiová (Germany) – Noskova (Czech Republic) 6:7 (6:8), 6:2, 6:2, Kalininová (26-Ukrainian) – Bouzasová (Sp.) 6:4, 6:3. 2nd round: Curenková (Ukrainian) – Siniakova (Czech Republic) 6:4, 6:1, Svitolina (Ukr.) – Mertens (28-Belg.) 6:1, 1:6, 6:1, Kenin (USA) – Wang Sin-yü (China) 6: 4, 6:3, Bogdanová (Romania) – Parksová (USA) 1:6, 6:3, 6:2.
