Only Sára Bejlek failed on the opening day of the tournament in Melbourne. The seventeen-year-old player lost to the favored Canadian and the thirty-two seed Leylah Fernandez 6:7 and 2:6.
The 28-year-old Krejčíková defeated Hontamaová, the 122nd tennis player in the world, in two hours and 25 minutes. The defending champion of last year’s round of 16 succeeded despite 47 unforced errors. She recorded her first win of the season. “It was a tough match. Mai played very well and I, on the other hand, did not do well. But I still believed and I’m glad that I finally won,” said Krejčíková in an interview on the court.
Two-time Roland Garros 2021 winner Krejčíková lost four games in a row in the first set from 2-2 and Hontama took the lead. Also in the second set, the tennis player from Ivančice faced difficult moments. She made up for the lack of a break three times, but won three games in a row from 3:4, took advantage of the fourth set point and forced a decisive third set.

“I mainly tried to stay in the game. I was losing in the second set, but I never give up. The first rounds are always difficult. I’m happy that I advanced and I’m looking forward to the next match,” added Krejčíková. In the 2nd round, she will face the German Tamara Korpatschová.
Brenda Fruhvirtová also lost the first set against Romanian Bogdanová. In the second set, however, the native of Prague equalized thanks to a break in the tenth game, and in the decisive act she escaped to a 5:1 lead after two more breaks. In the eighth game, she didn’t use four match points on Bogdanová’s serve, but then she didn’t hesitate on her own serve.
In the next round, Linda Fruhvirtová’s younger sister, who is two years younger, could meet the defending champion of Belarus, Aryna Sabalenkova. The world number two will face Germany’s Ella Seidel.
For the third time, Macháč advanced to the 2nd round of the first Grand Slam of the season. The 23-year-old native of Beroun defeated the world’s 138th player Močizuki in two and a half hours in three sets. He lost serve only once and saved six of seven break points. The Japanese paid for 54 unforced errors, the Czech tennis player made thirty fewer. Macháč will try to improve his Grand Slam record either against Frances Tiafoe from the USA or Croatian Born Čoric.
