BAKERSFIELD, calif. (KERO) – Libraries across Kern County are buzzing with creativity this summer as the “Books in Motion” program brings stories to life thru dance. This free initiative, championed by 23ABC, is designed to boost literacy and promote active lifestyles, offering a unique blend of storytelling and movement for the entire community.
At Beale Library, the magic of “Alice in Wonderland” captivated attendees. The program’s commitment to inclusivity was notably evident, with ASL interpreters ensuring that the Deaf community could fully participate. Orscar Arevalo & Estefani Arevalo shared their viewpoint: “There are many deaf children who need access to their language, so by providing ASL interpreters, they’re able to understand what’s happening and what’s being said. It’s an inclusive event. ASL is our first language, so they can actually be included. When there’s no ASL interpreter provided, there’s no way for us to access what’s going on or even know what the event is about.”
The visual nature of dance proved to be a powerful engagement tool. “I think they were fascinated by the dancing, the ballet, and the movement because it was so visual,” one attendee noted. “They really enjoyed the activity, especially how it matched the performance and the story of Alice in Wonderland. It was a great experience for them.”
The “Alice in Wonderland” performance alone drew over 250 participants, highlighting the program’s broad appeal. With more “Books in Motion” events scheduled throughout the summer, there are ample opportunities to experience this enriching cultural offering.
