Extreme heatwave to hit southwest Germany: Up to 35 degrees expected in Stuttgart

The people in the southwest will have to deal with tropical nights and extremely hot days in the next few days – up to 35 degrees are expected in downtown Stuttgart. If you like it cooler, there is mainly one region in the country.

In the next few days, more sweating is announced in the south-west. The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of extreme heat stress for the Upper Rhine region. The temperatures could reach up to 34 degrees in Breisgau, the DWD announced on Tuesday. The maximum values this week can be expected on Thursday and Friday, said DWD meteorologist Marco Puckert. It could also get up to 35 degrees in the center of Stuttgart and south of the airport to Metzingen. The experts are expecting thunderstorms towards the end of the week – it is still unclear when exactly. “Storms are also possible,” said Puckert.

When exactly the thunderstorms will start is currently “relatively unclear,” he said. The computer models are very different here. In the next few days, however, the weather experts are expecting hardly any thunderstorms – at most very selectively. The risk of thunderstorms will increase on Thursday evening or Friday. But it could also be that the thunderstorms only really start on Saturday night.

The start and location of the storm is not yet clear

Storms are also possible – where exactly is still unclear. “There is an incredible amount of water in the air at the moment,” said Puckert. If a cold front moves into the country towards the weekend, “a lot of water will come from the sky”.

Up to and including Friday, however, the midsummer hot and humid air mass will remain over the southwest. That means: More than 30 degrees during the day and at night are more widespread tropical nights – i.e. nights in which the temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees. On Thursday, “another blast of hot, muggy air from the Mediterranean region” will reach us. After temperatures of 31 or 32 degrees, it could be another one or two degrees more. If you want it cooler, you have to go to the Upper Black Forest: Friday will be between 21 and 25 degrees above 1200 meters.

Weather service warns of UV radiation

The DWD also expects increased UV radiation by Thursday. A meteorologist from the weather service had therefore advised at the beginning of the week to think of sunscreen and a hat and to avoid the blazing sun.

There will be rain or rain showers in the country by Saturday at the latest. “From Saturday, the muggy, hot air will gradually be replaced by slightly cooler air,” said Puckert. He expected moderately warm Atlantic air around 20 to 25 degrees from Sunday. “From Sunday we can air again.”

Freiburg Climate Camp vs. Christmas Market: Legal Dispute over Town Hall Square

Freiburg Climate Camp vs. Christmas Market: Legal Dispute over Town Hall Square

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 16, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The Freiburg climate camp on the town hall square should shrink according to the will of the city and even make room for the Christmas market. The municipality is preparing for a legal dispute: “Now we will do what is necessary and, if necessary, have the matter clarified in court,” said Mayor Martin Horn (independent) on Wednesday. The city had previously issued two decrees to the climate camp. The activists had already announced that they might take the dispute to the local administrative court.

According to the information, one of the decrees states that the four tents must be temporarily dismantled so that the Christmas market can take place on the square as usual. Under the second injunction, two of the four tents must be permanently removed. So they shouldn’t be set up again after the Christmas market.

“Our town hall square belongs to all Freiburg residents, but it does not belong to tents that have been mostly empty for months,” explained Horn. “We would have liked to have solved the issue without a legal dispute and therefore held many discussions and made fair offers.” It was disappointing that there was no concession from the climate camp. It’s about proportionality and fairness, said the OB. “We as a city cannot be blackmailed.”

The Black Forest metropolis with more than 230,000 inhabitants describes itself as “Green City” (“Green City”) and had offered the camp, which is present day and night with tents, two alternative locations for the duration of the Christmas market. The climate camp rejected this, among other things, due to security concerns. The camp had been set up just over a year ago. The Christmas market has existed since 1973.

Significant Decrease in Doctorate Starters in Baden-Württemberg in 2022

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) – Last year significantly fewer people started a doctorate in Baden-Württemberg than the year before. As the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday in Stuttgart, 5,244 people began their doctorates at a university in the southwest last year, around ten percent fewer than in 2021. At that time, the number of newly started doctorates was 5,841.

The Ministry of Science assumes that the high number of newly started doctorates in 2021 will represent an upward trend. One suspects a “catch-up effect” for doctoral students from abroad. «At the beginning of the corona pandemic, international mobility had largely come to a standstill. As a result, it is possible that international people interested in doing a doctorate have postponed their stay at a university or research institution in Baden-Württemberg by one year,” said a spokeswoman. Because the proportion of foreign doctoral students in Baden-Württemberg is high, fluctuations in international mobility behavior could become very noticeable.

According to the statistics office, a total of 32,000 doctoral procedures were carried out in Baden-Württemberg last year, a third of them in the fields of human medicine and health sciences.

Christian Günter’s Strong Performance and Goal After Arm Injury: SC Freiburg Captain Inspires in DFB Cup Victory

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 14, 2023

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The broken arm does not stop Christian Günter. “It was a bit unusual at first, but now the track is almost part of me,” said the SC Freiburg captain with a smile after beating his team in the first round of the DFB Cup against the surprisingly strong fifth division team SV Oberachern on Sunday as Joker had led to a 2-0 (0-0) victory.

The 30-year-old explained that he would probably have to wear the splint for around four more weeks. Ultimately, it also depends on how you feel. But she doesn’t restrict him on the pitch. The full-back feels prepared for the fight to return to the starting XI. “I’m ready,” he said, looking ahead to the Bundesliga start at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim next Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky).

Günter, who broke his right arm in preparation for the season and was therefore absent for a long time, was substituted on in the 55th minute against Oberachern. Five minutes later he made it 1-0 and paved the way for the SC to progress. “I understood and accepted the decision,” said Günter about his non-consideration for the starting line-up. With his performance he has now “offered himself”, he summed up.

Coach Christian Streich gave a lot of praise for the veteran, who, together with Nicolas Höfler, who also came on as a substitute, had noticeably livened up the Freiburg game. Günter was an “absolute professional” and the way he started the game was a “signal” to everyone who came off the bench during the season. “That’s how you behave, that’s how you present yourself,” said Streich. He was “extremely happy” about Günter’s goal.
