Bad Salzuflenโ & Bochum-Wattenscheid, North โคRhine-westphalia – In a surprising turn of events, the โคOption for Germany (AfD) has securedโ two key positions โฃin local government in North Rhine-Westphalia, โคraising concerns among established parties.
In Bad Salzuflen, Sabine Reinknecht of the AfDโ was unexpectedly elected to a โคcouncil post at the inaugural meeting,โค despite โฃthe partyโฃ holding only 13 seats on the council. Reinknecht received 16 votes,โ a result that prompted dismay from CDU Mayor โคDieter Tolkemitt, who stated to WDR, “Seven colleagues votedโ no and there was one abstention.Through their actions, they actively contributed to it, even if they โคdid not vote for the AfD.” Heโฃ added the result showed “that you apparently cannotโฃ rely โon agreements in the cityโ council.” The initial plan was for representatives โfrom the CDU, SPD, and Greens toโ fill the positions. AfD โขparty leader โคAlice Weidel congratulated Reinknecht, calling it a “sensational success” on X. The SPD parliamentary โgroup in Bad Salzuflen expressed outrage, stating that assisting the AfD’s rise to power “does not strengthen democracy, โฃbut rather weakens it.”
Separately, in Bochum-Wattenscheid, Cedricโ Sontowski of โฃthe AfD was recently elected as second deputy district mayor. Similar to the Bad Salzuflen outcome, sontowski โฃreceived more votes โฃthanโค the AfD’s portrayalโค on the district council. Newly elected SPD district mayor Holger Dรผnenbacke expressed his shock,โ refusing to shake hands with AfD parliamentary group leader Maik Klaus following the โคvote.Sontowski responded to the “WAZ” โstating, “I don’t find my choiceโ that surprising. It also corresponds to the will of the voters.” Greenโค Party politician Oliver Buschmann labeled the process a “defeat for democracy” and a case of “a traitorโข to our โคdemocratic system,” while SPD representatives described it โขas a “catastrophe” for the previous democratic alliance in the city.
