Beyond the Bachelor’s: Gen Z finds Chanceโฃ in Skilled Trades
A growing number of Gen Z students areโค opting for direct pathways to well-paying careers through vocational training, challenging the customary emphasis on four-year degrees. Twenty-two-year-old Dylan Haigwood exemplifies this trend. โHe’s already โฃemployedโ asโ an aircraftโค mechanic โat CVG Airport, earning aโค salary โthat surpasses many of his peers who pursued bachelor’sโ degrees.
Haigwood’s success stems โขfromโค his โฃrecentโค graduation from Cincinnati State’sโข aviation maintenance program. The two-year programโค focusesโ onโฃ practical, hands-on training and โขculminates in valuable FAA certifications, preparing students for immediate entry into the workforce. He was โขhired full-time at Airborne Maintenance & Engineering Services just weeks after completing the program.”It’s a greatโข feeling to start a career with this kind of income โright out of school,” Haigwood stated, “I feel like it’s setting me up โขfor a secure future.”
Haigwood’s story isn’t unique. Aโ recent report from the Cincinnati โUSA Regional Chamber underscores a critical need for skilled workers โขin the region, notably in โhigh-demand โฃfields like โaviation, construction, and healthcare. This demand is driving increased interest in, and value of, technical education.
Cincinnati โคState Provost Robbin Hoopes notes the strong financial returns for graduates of their technical programs. “Across allโค our programs, averageโ earnings โฃexceed $55,000 annually,” she explained. “in aviation maintenance specifically, starting salaries range from $70,000โ to $80,000. With overtimeโข -โ which is common forโฃ our graduates -โข many earn close toโ $100,000 in โtheir first year.”
Recognizing this shift, Cincinnatiโฃ Public Schools is proactively expanding access to career and technical education.โ The โdistrict has integrated โฃthese courses into every school, exposing high school studentsโ to potential careers in areas likeโข construction, public safety, andโ media arts before they graduate.
Thisโข early exposure, coupled with โคthe promise of stable, well-compensatedโค employment, is โฃattracting a new generation to the skilled trades. As Haigwood puts it, “We’re highly skilled technicians who have worked hard for our positions. It’s a truly rewarding career path.”
