Waymo: Driverless robo-taxis are being tested on highways

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 12, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The US start-up Waymo plans to begin testing its fully autonomous vehicles without human safety drivers on highways in the greater San Francisco area this week, the US tech portal TechCrunch reported on Monday.

“The company’s employees will be the first guinea pigs,” it says in the reportThe first tests will begin outside of rush hour with “less than a handful” of vehicles. The move comes at a time when Waymo, armed with an additional five billion dollar investment from parent company Alphabet, is pushing to expand its robotaxi operations in San Francisco. Just last week, Waymo added another 25 square kilometers to its robotaxi service area to include cities in the surrounding area of the Californian metropolis.

Traffic violations and investigations

Waymo operates a 24-hour robotaxi service in San Francisco, California. However, there has been tension there for some time over the autonomous vehicles. These were approved by the relevant federal authority against the resistance of the city authorities. In January, San Francisco filed a lawsuit against the federal authority that granted the approval.

Then, in early February, a Waymo vehicle hit a cyclist, who was slightly injured. A few days later, the conflict reached a new level: a crowd damaged and smeared an empty Waymo robot taxi in the middle of a busy street in San Francisco and finally set it on fire to applause.

Investigations against Waymo

An application by Waymo to expand its robotaxi operations in the counties of Los Angeles and San Mateo in the US state of California was initially stopped by the regulatory authorities – probably also due to the events described. In March, the Alphabet subsidiary was finally granted approval, including permission to charge for autonomous journeys on the highway.

But the reports of accidents and breakdowns did not stop after that. Numerous incidents involving the autonomous driving of Waymo cars on the road led to an official investigation in May. This was expanded shortly afterwards. The reason was new violations of traffic safety, such as driving in the lane of oncoming traffic, collisions with parked cars and other stationary objects, driving into unpaved construction sites and ignoring traffic rules. After an accident, the company launched a voluntary recall campaign in mid-June. The recall affects the software of the automated driving system (Automated Driver System – ADS).

Nvidia’s Fabless Business: Designing GPUs for Gaming, 3D Graphics, and AI Development

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 5, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

[인포스탁데일리=윤서연 기자] Nvidia is operating a fabless business that designs and sells GPUs used for gaming, 3D graphics, and AI research and development. It started in the PC graphics sector and has recently expanded its application to AI, data science, autonomous driving, and robots.

Nvidia CI.

As of FY23, sales are ▲Datacenter 56% ▲Gaming 34% ▲Professional Visualization 6%. The gaming division’s sales portion shrank from 51% in FY20 to 34%, but top-line growth continues thanks to brisk datacenter earnings.

Major products include GPU platform GeForce RTX for PC, server GPU A100/H100 for high-performance computing (HPC), and chips for autonomous driving DRIVE Orin/DRIVE Thor.

It divides the server GPU market with AMD and has an overwhelming lead with an 80% share. In the second half of this year, server CPU ‘Grace’ and ‘Grace’ CPU combined with GPU ‘Grace-Hopper Superchip’ are scheduled to be released.

Kim Seon-woo, a researcher at Meritz Securities, said, “The company is the best beneficiary of the AI investment frenzy. After generative AI, self-driving momentum big techs are scrambling to invest in AI, and it is essential to install high-performance GPUs in AI servers.”

At the last performance presentation, we mentioned the situation of excess demand for high-performance data center GPUs such as the H100 and A100.

Researcher Kim said, “Meanwhile, exports of high-performance GPUs to China have been banned and some concerns have been raised about the company’s performance, but the impact on performance seems to be minimized thanks to strong sales of alternative semiconductor products that meet regulatory requirements.”

Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E-Performance: King of the four-cylinder

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 26, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Departing from the iconic V8: The C 63, which is now called the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E-Performance in full, comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo. E-Performance, that means: As a hybrid, it is also driven by an electric motor on the rear axle – and that is why it is only available with all-wheel drive. The specified system output is 500 kW/680 hp. AMG is proud that the combustion engine is currently the most powerful 4-cylinder engine in the world with an output per liter of 176 kW/238 hp.

The considerable weight of over 2 tons is now almost perfectly distributed 50:50 on the front and rear axles. Because the four-cylinder is 56 kilograms lighter than the previous V8, and the battery, weighing 89 kilograms, is positioned on the rear axle. The hybrid system weighs a total of around 250 kilograms; the batteries were developed by AMG itself and are also built there.

What distinguishes the AMG approach from other plug-in hybrids: long range is not the goal here, and only around 13 kilometers of purely electric driving are possible. Rather, the full battery performance should be available as consistently as possible, even with repeated use. With an electric turbo, the “turbo lag” should be avoided, the electric drive should ensure maximum acceleration from a standstill. To ensure that the sound remains authentic, a microphone is installed on the exhaust system that plays the actual exhaust noise into the interior loudspeakers.

So much for technology. But how does that feel? AMG has invited test drives to Malaga, Spain; after you need winter tires in Germany, you can still drive with sports tires here.

Even the first impression is right: I take a seat in the new performance seat and the sports car feeling immediately sets in. Comfortable, but above all handy, perfect fit. The interior is not stingy with noble materials: leather, aluminum, carbon fiber. The large center screen offers plenty of space for information and operation, the head-up display completes the permanent data presentation.

We drive off in comfort mode, fully electric. The acceleration is surprisingly powerful, but not as spontaneous as I would have expected – that’s probably due to the mode settings. Then the combustion engine kicks in: the sound is warm and sporty, but unmistakably four-cylinder, emphasized again by the loudspeakers in the parcel shelf. The formerly deep and sonorous eight-cylinder background noise, actually the trademark of AMG, is missing.

The motorsport genes are still clearly noticeable, also and especially on the race track. The new C 63 also feels very agile thanks to the standard steering rear axle. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 3.4 seconds: impressive. And thanks to all-wheel drive and optimal weight distribution, driving has become much easier and more relaxed. The boost indicator flashes to indicate that you can give full load for 10 seconds. Then it flashes again. The transition to the limit is predictable, electronically soft controlled, slight oversteer is tolerated. The car is significantly less brutal and easier to drive.

And there is also a bit of video game appeal: 20 racetracks are currently programmed, on which lap times are recorded using GPS data and full load recommendations are given. In the near future there will be 70 racetracks. Customers will appreciate that. But whether they will be as enthusiastic about the four-cylinder as they have been about the V8 remains to be seen. Study: Germans’ favorite car remains the petrol engine

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 4, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Insurer Allianz Direct wanted to know what drivers really want. And a representative poll that has now been presented has yielded startling results: They would prefer a petrol engine. A proud 43% of the 800 respondents said they preferred this classic guide. 27 percent would choose a hybrid, i.e. a combustion engine with electrification, while only 20 percent would choose an all-electric car. The reputation of the long-clean, cheap diesel seems to have been ruined: only 10 percent of all potential buyers still want a diesel. According to the study, the most popular car overall is a small car from the VW brand, with a petrol engine.

The bigger the budget available, the better the electric will be. In the lower price ranges, only 25 percent appreciate a hybrid or even electric drive, while a proud 78 percent of buyers with a budget of over 100,000 euros prefer to drive electrified. And the willingness to try out an autonomous vehicle is also higher in the upper price range. Overall, however, only 21% of all buyers would like to drive themselves. 36 percent categorically reject the approach, 43 percent are still undecided.

Preferences by age group are surprising in times when climate kids are hyped in the media. The youngest buyers, in the 18 to 24 age group, are the least willing to buy an electric or hybrid vehicle, by a third. On the other hand, driving pleasure is higher in relation to benefits than in any other age group, i.e. by an impressive 47%. This figure drops to just 29% for the older drivers surveyed (55 to 65 years old). No wonder that among the boomers, however, the percentage of fans of SUVs is highest, and the lowest among young customers. Is this a trend reversal?

Incidentally, the deciding factor for the purchase is the price (49 percent), followed by fuel consumption (36 percent). Of the 14 aspects listed, “environment and sustainability” ranks far behind with 14 percent, followed only by the country of production (4 percent) and – self-proclaimed experts now we need to be strong – the opinion of friends and acquaintances (2 percent ). The favorite color is black (36 percent), the most important extra is air conditioning (56 percent). Only 9% attach importance to Internet access in the car, a topic that has perhaps been talked about a bit too much in recent years.

And the study clears up another misconception: The vast majority of customers prefer to buy their car from new car dealerships (57 percent), followed by used car dealerships (21 percent). A total of 12% would like to buy from online retailers. (aum/jm)
