Mexico Electric Vehicle Exports Surge: US Dominance in 2024

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 13, 2025

Mexico Now Leads US in Electric Vehicle Exports, Surpassing Major Automakers

Mexico City – Mexico has overtaken Japan, ⁤South Korea, and Germany to become the leading⁤ supplier of electric vehicles (EVs) to the United States, shipping 145,000 units in 2024, according to ‍the latest EvolvX⁢ Mexico Mobility Report by Latam Mobility. This marks a significant shift in the North American automotive landscape, fueled by increased investment and a robust ‌domestic supply⁣ chain.

The country doubled its overall EV production in 2024, reaching 220,000 units, with the majority destined for the U.S. market. “This change confirms Mexico’s strategic role as a key player in the clean mobility supply chain in North America,” stated Rebeca González,co-founder of Latam mobility. “It’s supported by its competitive manufacturing base, human capital and an expanding charging infrastructure network.”

Mexico’s exports to the U.S. have tripled from 2023 to 2024, capitalizing on its geographic proximity, skilled workforce, and favorable trade agreements like the USMCA (formerly T-MEC). While Japan and South Korea remain significant automotive suppliers, the‍ USMCA provides a distinct advantage for Mexican exports.

Currently, four major automakers are driving Mexico’s EV export boom: General ⁣Motors, shipping the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV; Ford, exporting the mustang Mach-E;⁤ Stellantis, producing the Wagoneer S; and Toyota,‍ sending the Hybrid Tacoma.

As⁣ of September 2024, ⁤the Mexican association of the automotive Industry (AMIA) reports a cumulative⁤ production of 171,749 electric and hybrid vehicles – a 42.5% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth underscores Mexico’s rapidly expanding role ‌in the global EV market.

Toyota Regains China Market Share with Affordable EVs

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 1, 2025

Toyota Gains ⁤Ground in China with Affordable bZ3X EV

Shanghai – Toyota is‌ making inroads in the fiercely competitive Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market with its new bZ3X, priced around $15,000, adn a broader strategy focused on⁣ localized production ⁢and a growing EV lineup. The automaker’s‌ China sales rose 6% between January and August, bucking a trend of decline seen by other Japanese carmakers.

Toyota debuted the bZ3X, emphasizing its⁢ spacious interior designed as a ‌”cozy Home,” and plans to ‌expand its China ⁤offerings with the bZ5, bZ7, and a revamped Lexus line available in both EV and hybrid versions. This expansion is⁣ supported by plans for a wholly owned factory ‌near Shanghai, slated to begin production in ⁣2027 with an initial annual ‍output of 100,000‍ battery-powered EVs‍ for the‌ Lexus ⁤brand – making Toyota only the second‍ foreign passenger carmaker after Tesla ⁢to fully own a manufacturing facility in China.

Despite increasing ‌sales, Toyota faces⁣ profitability⁢ challenges. Average ‌profit per car dropped to ¥162,000 ($1,090) ⁣in fiscal 2024,down from ¥274,000 in fiscal 2021,with total China profits falling from ¥525 billion to ¥290‍ billion ⁣over the same period, according to ‍Pelham Smithers.⁢

Early adopters of the bZ3X have reported minor ⁤issues, with one customer, Yu, ⁢noting dozens of⁣ trivial problems and some design elements ‍falling short of Toyota’s gasoline models, though he indicated he would ⁤still ‍repurchase the vehicle. The company ⁣is⁣ also‌ navigating⁤ shifting consumer⁣ preferences, as‌ growth in hybrid vehicle sales has slowed – up 17% in the first eight months of 2024 compared⁤ to 76% growth in the same‍ period last⁤ year – as fully electric cars regain popularity due to advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure.

Toyota’s performance stands in contrast to its⁤ Japanese competitors. Nissan Motor Co. experienced a 9% sales decline, while Honda Motor co. saw a 21% drop in china⁤ during the same ⁣January-August period. Bloomberg ⁣Intelligence senior auto analyst Tatsuo Yoshida observes a growing divide, ⁣stating, “toyota on one side, everyone else on the other.”

Acura ZDX Discontinuation: Why the Luxury EV is Being Scrapped

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 28, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Acura to discontinue ZDX Electric ⁢SUV Amid Tax Credit Changes

Acura ‌will discontinue its ZDX electric SUV following the September 30th⁤ expiration of the federal EV tax credit, according to an internal memo obtained by USA Today.⁢ The decision highlights the meaningful impact of shifting government policies on the electric vehicle market ⁣and underscores the importance of incentives in consumer adoption.

The Acura ZDX, priced starting at $64,500, currently qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit. Though, with the incentive’s impending removal, Acura believes the ZDX’s value proposition diminishes against competitors, particularly its sister vehicle, ⁣the Honda Prologue. The⁢ Prologue, starting at $47,400, offers a similar 308-mile range and 220‍ horsepower, making it a more attractive option without the tax benefit. The ZDX boasts 358 horsepower and ⁢a 313-mile range.

Acura attributed the decision ⁢to “recent policy changes impacting EV production⁢ and sales” in the‌ internal dialog. The elimination of the tax credit effectively levels the playing field, making more affordable EVs like the Prologue – which offers comparable features for a lower price point – more competitive. A fully-equipped Honda Prologue Elite trim, including⁢ all-wheel drive, heated/ventilated seats, and a head-up display, is available for $57,900.

The ZDX’s discontinuation demonstrates the sensitivity of the EV market to government incentives and signals a potential shift in manufacturer strategies as policies evolve. Consumers considering an Acura ZDX should finalize purchases before September 30th⁣ to take ⁤advantage of the⁤ $7,500 tax credit.

Subaru Legacy Ends Production: A Legacy of Reliability

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 23, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Subaru Legacy: A Farewell to a Reliable Icon – Summary & Key Takeaways

This report details the end of production for⁤ the Subaru Legacy sedan in 2025, ‍marking⁣ the⁢ close of a 36-year chapter for the brand. Here’s a breakdown of the key information:

Key Points:

* End of an Era: The final Legacy rolled off ‍the Indiana assembly line in Magnetic Gray, equipped ‍with a 2.5-liter engine adn all-wheel drive. Over 1.4 million Legacy sedans ⁣have been sold in the US.
* Ancient significance: Introduced in 1989, the Legacy was Subaru’s first US-made vehicle (Indiana ⁣plant, initially a joint ⁣venture with Isuzu). It ‌pioneered features ⁢like multi-point fuel injection and four-wheel⁣ disc brakes for Subaru. Crucially, the legacy wagon formed the basis for the highly successful Subaru Outback.
* ⁢ Reasons for Discontinuation:

* Shifting Market trends: Consumer preference is overwhelmingly moving towards SUVs and crossovers. Legacy sales have declined from ~27,000 ⁤units in the‌ 2020s to ~19,500 in 2024.
* Electrification Focus: Subaru is investing‍ heavily in electric vehicles, aiming for eight fully electric ‍models by 2028. ⁢ Ending ⁤Legacy production frees⁤ up⁢ factory capacity for more popular models and EV growth.
* Legacy’s Impact: The Legacy built Subaru’s reputation for reliability, safety, and all-wheel-drive capability. It also has a legacy in motorsports, with Colin McRae⁤ winning his ‍first World Rally Championship event in a Legacy in 1993.
*⁣ outback’s Future: While ‌Legacy sedan ⁤production ends, the Outback (originally⁣ based on the Legacy wagon) ⁣will continue. Production will move to Japan in October⁣ 2025, but a ⁤redesigned Outback is planned for 2026. The Outback was Subaru’s best-selling model in the US in 2023.
* Subaru’s Future: Subaru is prioritizing SUVs/crossovers and electrification. The Indiana plant will focus on models like the Forester and Forester Hybrid, preparing for increased EV production.

In essence, the‍ Legacy’s end ⁢isn’t a reflection of the ‍car’s quality, but ⁢a strategic decision driven by market forces and Subaru’s commitment to future technologies and consumer demands. The⁣ Legacy paved ⁢the way for Subaru’s success, and its spirit lives on⁢ in models like the Outback and the brand’s continued focus on reliability and capability.

Hybrid Car Battery Issues: Short Trips & Environmental Impact

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 20, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Hybrid Cars: The ‍Impact of Infrequent use on Battery Life

Hybrid vehicles, combining petrol‌ adn⁣ electric power, are often touted as‌ an environmentally⁣ friendly option. However, a growing number of owners are experiencing unexpectedly short lifespans for⁢ their 12-volt batteries⁢ – the battery powering the car’s onboard electronics, not used for starting a combustion engine. this issue is particularly prevalent for those who⁣ drive infrequently or‌ make⁢ primarily short trips.

One owner of a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid reported needing‌ to replace⁣ the 12-volt battery twice already,a stark contrast to‍ the five to ten-year ‌lifespan he experienced with previous petrol-powered vehicles. While Toyota recommends increased driving‍ as a solution, the underlying issue appears to be a design characteristic of hybrid systems.

According to Toyota, hybrid 12-volt batteries are intentionally smaller ‍than those found in conventional cars. This reduction⁤ in size contributes to⁤ weight savings and improved efficiency. However,⁢ it also makes them more vulnerable to discharge from limited ⁢use and cold weather.

The manufacturer maintains this isn’t a case of planned obsolescence, stating ⁤that most⁣ drivers won’t encounter‌ problems. But for⁣ those driving less than 3,000 kilometers per‍ year, or who frequently leave their vehicle unused ‌for extended periods, premature⁤ battery wear and potential starting issues are⁤ a real concern.

Nicolas Leuba, president of the Vaudish Union of garagistes, confirms this isn’t isolated to Toyota. ‌”I questioned several garage owners. We have noticed this problem in several brands,” he stated on‌ a recent radio program. While the smaller battery size explains some⁣ of the vulnerability, Leuba believes it doesn’t fully account for the observed lack of reliability.

Experts ⁢emphasize ⁣that choosing⁣ the right vehicle for your driving habits is crucial. Leuba ⁢stresses that different engine types require different usage patterns. For hybrid vehicles, he suggests a revised sales pitch:⁢ “If you drive your vehicle regularly, it ⁢is the ideal vehicle for you. If, conversely, you live in the mountains, far from the city and you rarely use your ⁣vehicle, a hybrid is ⁤not panacea, even an ecological misinterpretation.”

This raises ⁢questions about ⁣the ⁤overall environmental impact of hybrid technology when factoring in the ‌increased frequency of battery replacements, particularly⁢ for drivers whose‌ lifestyles don’t align with the vehicle’s optimal usage profile.

Audi Hungary Employment Drops Amid Automotive Industry Challenges

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 17, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Győr, Hungary – ⁤Audi⁤ Hungaria’s workforce has decreased by 720 employees since teh end of 2023, bringing its total headcount below 11,000, according to a ⁤report by Telex. The reduction, representing a 6% decline, occurs as the broader Hungarian automotive ‍industry faces headwinds, though Audi’s ‌cuts ⁢are comparatively restrained.

The vehicle factory, currently operating at full capacity with⁤ production of the Audi Q3 and Cupra Terramar, contrasts with a recent downturn in engine manufacturing volume. This follows a trend impacting ⁢numerous German automotive suppliers operating in Hungary.

Between mid-2023 and July 2024, Audi’s⁤ Győr plants saw⁣ a reduction of nearly 1,400 positions, falling from a stock of almost 13,000 to below 11,600.

Across the ‌25 largest Hungarian automotive employers, only six increased staffing levels between December 2023 and July 2024. BMW’s Debrecen factory, slated to begin production next month, experienced the largest increase, nearing 25%.

Other companies experiencing important workforce reductions include Flextronics International‌ Ltd. (down over 730), Continental Group (over 440), and Bosch (over 330). While Audi’s headcount reduction was⁤ the largest in absolute numbers among large‌ corporations, its percentage decrease was less pronounced ‍than that of companies like Thyssenkrupp, Hanon Systems, Linamar, and ZF Hungaria, all exceeding 10% ‌declines.

Data from the Central Statistical Office indicates a nearly 3% decline in the Hungarian automotive industry during the first seven months of the year, with stagnation in‍ July compared to the ⁢previous ⁢year.
