Cross-Party MPs Demand Starmer Prioritizeโค audit Reform Legislation
LONDON – A groupโข of prominent MPs from acrossโ the political spectrum have written to Labor leader Keir Starmer urging him to prioritize โthe โpassage of long-delayed audit reform legislation. The letter, signed byโ LabourS Clive Betts,Conservatives’ Sir โGeoffreyโค Clifton-Brown,Liberalโ Democrat Daisy Cooper, and Green Siรขn Berry, highlights a continued lack of adequateโ market oversight following a series of high-profile corporate failures.
The MPs’ call comes over seven years after the collapseโ of Carillion, despite multiple reviews,a government Whiteโ Paper, and extensive public consultation. They argueโค that failures in audit and governance continue to plague โขthe UK economy, citing the collapses of patisserie Valerie, Bulb, Thomas Cook, Wilko, and ISG as evidence of ongoingโฃ weaknesses.
“It is deeplyโข concerning that over seven years have passed since the collapseโ of Carillion, yet no legislation has been brought forward,” the letter stated. โ”Meanwhile,โฃ we have witnessed further high-profile corporate failures linked to weaknesses in audit and governanceโฆmaking it clear that market oversight remains far fromโ adequate.”
The politicians emphasized the devastating consequences โคof corporate collapses,โข impacting jobs, pensions, and smaller businesses within โsupply chains,โ warning that such failures are “theโค polar opposite of economicโฃ growth.” They reminded Starmer that the Auditโฃ Reform and Corporate โคGovernance Bill “enjoys strong cross-partyโ support” and urged theโ government to “actโ now” and prioritize its passage through Parliament.
This push for reform arrives amidstโ a reshuffle of Starmer’s top team following Angela Rayner’s resignation last week over a tax scandal, and โฃthe subsequent sacking of a batch of ministersโค onโ Friday.
