The New York โคTimes to Integrate Podcasts into News App, Discontinues Standalone Audio Product
NEW YORK – September 4,โ 2025 – The New York Times announced today it will discontinue its dedicated Audio app and integrate its full podcast libary, including videoโ components, directly โinto its flagship Newsโ app. The โฃmove signals a shift in the publisherS strategy, reflecting a belief that distinct “audio” and “mobile” audiences are becoming โฃincreasingly blurred. The Times’ podcast archive, encompassing showsโฃ like The Ezra Klein Show and Hard Fork, will now be accessibleโค within the News app. however, content fromโ third-partyโ publishers previously featured in theโค Audio app, such as The newโ Yorker, will not โbe migratingโค to the News app.
According to Arthur Dolnick,โ a spokesperson for The Times, the publisherโค is focused on offering content in multiple formats to cater to evolving user preferences. “The overarching goal is to make more of its contentโฃ available in a variety ofโข formats,โฃ allowing users โขto consume the news in whichever way they prefer, whether that changes over the course ofโข a day โฃor aโค lifetime,” Dolnick โขsaeid.
The integration will extend beyond simply hosting โpodcasts. The times is working to enhanceโ personalization features, surfacing new episodes basedโฃ on listener interests,โฃ and will expand the availability of audio versions of text articles, โallowing users toโ seamlessly switch โขbetween reading and listening.
The decision leaves โThe New โขYorkโฃ Times wihtโค a portfolioโฃ of fourโข apps:โค News,Cooking,Games, and The Athletic. Dolnick stated โคthere areโ currently no plans toโ consolidate these remaining apps, citing the unique experiences offered by Games and cooking. While theโข volume โขof content โproduced by The โathletic presents a challenge to integration, improved personalization technology – spurred in part by recent activist โฃshareholder pressure – isโข expected to โimprove discoverability โฃof relevant sports reporting. Brand safetyโค considerations, separating โnews and โsports content, also contribute to the decision to โคmaintain The Athletic โคas aโ separate entity.
“One of the hardest things in any media business is toโค be able toโค look at theirโค portfolio โof products and make dispassionate decisions,” noted โOren โขBerentson, managing director of โขCode and Theory. “something can serve a valuable intermediate or transitionalโ purpose and still have been aโ smart decision to create at the time.”
The moveโข by The New York times could signal a broader realignment in theโค podcasting landscape, โคpossibly prompting other publishers โขto reassess their reliance onโ dedicated audio platforms and prioritize direct integrationโข within existing news โecosystems.
