Atlanta Awarded NWSL Expansion Franchise for Record $165 Million
ATLANTA, GA – The National Women’s Soccerโ League (NWSL) is expanding to Atlanta, awarding โฃitsโ 17th franchise โขto a team backed by Arthur Blank’s AMB Sports + Entertainment for a league-record โฃ$165 million, sources familiar with theโ matter confirmed to The Athletic. The expansion fee surpasses the $110 million Denver Summit FCโ paid earlier this year and is significantly higher than theโค approximately $53 million paid by recent additionsโ Bay FC and โฃBoston โLegacy.
AMB Sports + Entertainment, which also ownsโข the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’ โAtlanta United FC, โคwill operate the new club. The team is โขslated to begin play sometime after the 2026 season and will call Mercedes-Benz Stadium โhome.
A spokespersonโ for Arthurโ M. Blank Sports and Entertainment acknowledged โขongoing โคdiscussions with the NWSL, stating, “We have had โproductive engagement with NWSL and โothers in its stakeholder group on the possibility of bringing anโค expansion franchise to Atlanta. We have nothing to announce currentlyโฃ as those conversations are ongoing.”
The NWSL has declined to comment.
Blank, 83, is also the owner of PGA TOUR Superstore, the โAtlanta Drive โคGolf Club, and the TGL golf league. He co-founded Home Depot and chairsโ The Arthur Blank familyโข Foundation.
The arrival of โthe Atlanta franchise marks the return of professional women’s soccerโ to the city, which previouslyโ hosted the Atlanta Beat in both the WUSA (2001-2003)โฃ and WPS (2010-2012)โ leagues.
The move further cements Atlanta’s growing prominence inโ the American soccer landscape. The โcity isโฃ set to become the future home of the U.S. Soccer Federation, with its โฃheadquarters and national training โคcenter relocating to Fayette County, Georgia by 2026. The Arthur M. โBlankโค Family Foundation โคis backing โคthe new facility, currently under construction and expected to be completed in time for the FIFA men’s Worldโข Cup next summer.
Atlanta has long been considered a prime candidate for an NWSL team. In Aprilโ 2024,โ prior to aโค USWNT match against Japan, U.S. women’s โฃnational team player Sam Coffey expressed her enthusiasm for the market,โ stating, “I think it โขwould beโ aโ great market for one with Atlanta โคUnited hear and โฃnow with U.S. Soccer starting to plant โsome roots here. I think it could do really well here.”
Details regarding theโ team name,โ crest,โค and colors will be revealedโค at a later โขdate.
