North Alabama’s colleges and universities contribute significantly to the region’s economic health, generating over $1.5 billion in economic impact and supporting tens of thousands of jobs, according to recent reports.
Calhoun Community College alone contributes $802.8 million to the regional economy, supporting 10,627 jobs across Madison, Morgan, Limestone, and Lawrence counties, a study by Lightcast revealed on February 12, 2025. The college’s alumni generated $723.3 million in added income in fiscal year 2023-24. Operational spending, including a $46.4 million payroll for 915 faculty and staff – 88% of whom reside within the service area – added another $58.5 million to the local economy, supporting 1,017 jobs. Further investment through campus construction contributed $9.9 million and 130 jobs, while student spending added $11.1 million and 206 jobs.
Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) contributes $137 million to the local economy, representing 2.6% of the area’s gross regional product, according to a separate Lightcast study released February 20, 2025. The study found that one in 28 jobs in the NACC service area is supported by the college and its students. NACC’s operations spending generated $21.8 million for the local economy, supporting 427 jobs, with 79% of its 386 employees living in the region. Alumni of NACC contributed $104.9 million in added income in fiscal year 2023-24.
The impact extends beyond these two institutions. Institutions like Athens State University, Alabama A&M University, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville collectively employ over 12,000 people, with a workforce where more than 90 percent hold at least a four-year degree, or an advanced degree. Graduates earn, on average, $900,000 more over their careers than high school graduates – roughly $20,000 annually – adding an estimated $1 billion per year to the regional economy from the 50,000-plus graduates currently employed in the area.
