France faces “Silent Hemorrhage” of โDebt, Prime โคMinister Warns of Looming โCrisis
PARISโฃ – Prime Minister Franรงois Bayrou deliveredโข a stark warning Monday regarding France’s escalating national debt, characterizingโข it as a “silent, underground, invisible hemorrhage” threatening future generations. Addressing the National assembly, โbayrou detailed a rapidly increasing burden of annual debt repayments, exceeding the nation’s yearly wealth production.
According to figures presented,France โฃgenerates approximately 50 โbillion euros in โwealth annually.โฃ Though, annual debt annuity payments have risenโ dramatically:โ from 30 โขbillion euros in 2020, to 60 billion in 2024, 67 billion this year, a projected 75 billion โขin 2026, โฃ85 โฃbillion โคthe following โyear, and a staggering 107 billion โขeurosโ by the end of the โdecade, as forecast by the โCourt of Auditors.
Bayrou emphasized theโ concrete nature of these figures, stating, “You must have the precise figures in mind because these figures are not at โall abstract.” He warned that younger โฃgenerations will “wear and willโ carry forโ twenty or thirty years the weight of thousands of billions of debtโข that their elders have contracted,” effectively breaking “the contract of trust.” He echoedโ concerns raised by Franรงois Bayrou, who called for intergenerational solidarity, lamenting a โฃyouth convinced they will “Never”โ see retirement.
The โฃPrime Minister’s address also took aimโฃ at political opponents poised to trigger a vote of no confidence, describing the potential outcomeโ as a “Tohu-Bohu” โ-โ a state of chaos – for France. He criticized the disparate nature of theโฃ opposing forces, noting they “designate โthemselves as enemies.” Bayrou framed the situation as a fundamental flaw in political parties, leading inevitably to division, and urged a path towards “shared truth and courage to choose together” for the future of french democracy.
