AP Top 25: Ohio State‌ Holds No. 1, Texas and Penn State Fall From Rankings

NEW YORK – ⁢ Ohio State remains the nation’s top-ranked⁢ team⁤ in the latest ⁤Associated Press ‌Top 25 poll, released Sunday, while preseason favorites Texas and Penn State both‍ dropped out following recent‍ losses. The ⁤Buckeyes’ continued dominance, highlighted by their impressive roster, solidified their position at No.⁣ 1, narrowly edging out ⁣Miami for the top spot despite the inherent difficulty of ranking teams without degrees of separation.

The shakeup sees Texas A&M climb to No. 3,jumping Oregon, whose best win is currently a road victory at Penn state.⁤ The Aggies’ own signature win came at notre Dame. While acknowledging oregon’s potential, the voter noted the Ducks “definitely look the part” despite the shift.

Both Texas and penn State, previously ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on the preseason ballot, are now unranked. The voter indicated both programs ⁢have‍ the potential to return‌ to the rankings, citing Penn State’s recent loss to UCLA as a⁢ setback, not a definitive fall from contention. However,⁣ both teams “need to show me something” to earn their way back into ‌the poll.

Memphis enters the Top 25 at No. 23, becoming the first bowl-eligible team in the country with a 6-0 record. They finished last ‌season‍ ranked No. 24. The addition ‍of Memphis, alongside a ranked Vanderbilt despite a loss to Alabama, gives‌ the state of Tennessee three teams in the AP Top 25 – joining no.⁤ 12 Tennessee – for the first time,⁢ according to the College Poll Archive. USF returns to the rankings at No. 24, largely due to⁢ a prior win‍ against⁣ Florida.

Looking ahead, three ranked matchups highlight next week’s schedule:

* ⁤⁢ No.⁣ 1 Ohio State at No. 17 Illinois: This will be the‍ tenth ⁢meeting between the teams while both are ranked, with Ohio State holding a 3-6‌ record in previous encounters, and ⁣having ⁤lost all four since 1964. Illinois has previously ‍defeated top-ranked ⁤Ohio State teams in 1950 and 2007.
* No. 7 Indiana at No. 3 Oregon: This is only the third meeting between⁤ Indiana and ⁤Oregon, and the first since Indiana won in Eugene in 2004, a ‌game marked‍ by seven oregon turnovers.
* ⁣ no. 8 Alabama at No. 14 Missouri: ⁤ Since Missouri joined‌ the SEC, Alabama has won both previous ranked matchups ⁢against the Tigers by a combined score of⁢ 76-13.

TCU vs. Arizona State Odds, Prediction & Best Bet

TCU favored ‌to upset Arizona State⁤ in Big‍ 12 ‍Clash

TEMPE, AZ – TCU is positioned as the team to beat when ⁢they face Arizona State Friday night, ⁢according to updated odds, despite⁢ playing on the ‌road. The Horned Frogs’ high-powered⁣ offense, led by quarterback Josh Hoover, has surged into the new season, making them a compelling pick against a Sun Devils team ‌that hasn’t yet found its⁢ stride.

This Big 12 showdown features a compelling quarterback matchup, but the‍ contrast in recent performance and defensive vulnerabilities suggests TCU holds the advantage.‌ While Arizona State’s Sam ⁢Leavitt ‌enjoyed ⁢a breakout season in 2024, leading the Sun Devils to a College Football Playoff berth, his play has been less consistent through the first four games of 2025. TCU, meanwhile, appears to be returning⁤ to form, fueled by Hoover’s impressive⁤ statistics.

Hoover has already amassed 1,000 passing yards and 11 touchdowns this season, lighting up⁣ opponents UNC, abilene Christian, and SMU. His performance has ⁣placed him sixth in the Heisman Trophy ⁤odds at BetMGM, currently listed at 15/1. Arizona State’s offense possesses the potential for explosive plays, but their pass⁢ defense has been susceptible, perhaps creating a challenging matchup against Hoover and the Horned Frogs’ aerial attack.

According ⁢to FanDuel, TCU is currently a +126 moneyline favorite.Analysts suggest this presents ⁤value, ‌believing the team⁤ is undervalued given their offensive firepower and‍ Arizona State’s defensive challenges.

The play: TCU (+126, FanDuel)

College Football Analysts Predict Breakout Quarterbacks in Fourth Round of Mock Draft

OXFORD, MS – July 12, 2024 – A panel of college football analysts from The Athletic have released their fourth-round picks in a mock draft focusing on potential breakout quarterbacks poised to make significant impacts in the upcoming 2024 season. The selections highlight a mix of players with proven potential, intriguing newcomers, and those benefiting from favorable coaching situations.

The selections, detailed below, offer a glimpse into which signal-callers are generating buzz amongst national college football observers as the season approaches. This round focuses heavily on quarterbacks with opportunities to seize starting roles or build upon promising performances from the previous year.

Here’s a breakdown of the analysts’ picks:

Round 4,Pick 1: Florida RB Montrell Jordan

Analyst Manny Navarro highlighted Jordan as a “quality darkhorse bet,” especially given the departure of Trevor Etienne to the NFL. Etienne, a key component of Florida’s rushing attack, rushed for 745 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2023. Jordan, a junior from Atlanta, Georgia, now has the opportunity to become the primary ball carrier for the Gators under head coach billy Napier. Navarro believes this presents a valuable opportunity for Jordan to showcase his abilities.

Round 4, Pick 2: Ole Miss QB Austin Simmons

David Ubben expressed confidence in Ole Miss head coach Lane kiffin’s track record with quarterbacks, referencing Kiffin’s success with Jake Coker at Alabama, leading them to a national championship in 2015. Simmons, a sophomore from McDonough, Georgia, demonstrated considerable potential in relief appearances for Jaxson Dart last season, completing 22 of 33 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Ubben notes Ole Miss has consistently maintained a high-powered passing offense under Kiffin, ranking no lower than 32nd nationally in yards per pass attempt and reaching the top 10 three times.

Round 4, Pick 3: Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola

Bruce Feldman pointed to the improvements in Nebraska’s receiving corps as a key factor in raiola’s potential. The Huskers addressed a significant weakness from the 2023 season by adding several wide receivers through the transfer portal, including Isaiah Neyor from Texas and Billy Kemp IV from Vanderbilt. Raiola, a true freshman from Chandler, Arizona, experienced typical growing pains in his debut season but has benefited from a full offseason working with offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, who has streamlined the playbook. Holgorsen, known for his offensive prowess, previously served as head coach at Houston and West Virginia.

Round 4, Pick 4: Duke QB Darian Mensah

Stewart Mandel acknowledged a trend of selecting players with significant Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals but emphasized his genuine impression of Mensah. Mensah, a redshirt freshman from Atlanta, Georgia, impressed Mandel during Tulane’s near-upset of Kansas State in Week 2 of the 2023 season. Mandel also praised Duke head coach Manny Diaz’s successful first year with the Blue Devils, achieving a 8-5 record and a bowl victory.

Round 4, pick 5: iowa QB Mark Gronowski

Scott Dochterman highlighted Gronowski’s impressive collegiate career at South Dakota State, where he led the Jackrabbits to back-to-back FCS national championships in 2022 and 2023. Gronowski, a graduate transfer from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, amassed 10,309 passing yards, 93 touchdowns, and 37 rushing touchdowns during his time at SDSU. Dochterman suggests Gronowski’s success could translate to the Power Five level if he performs well against challenging opponents like Oregon and Penn State.

Round 4, Pick 6: Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed

Ralph Russo explained his selection of Reed as a matter of principle, having previously written about Reed’s potential as an “underappreciated quarterback” in the SEC. Reed,a sophomore from Liberty,Texas, will compete with Conner Weigman for the starting role. Russo noted that Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, another potential candidate, went undrafted in this mock.

Round 4, Pick 7: SMU QB Kevin Jennings

Chris Vannini emphasized Jennings’ leadership in SMU’s undefeated ACC season and subsequent College Football Playoff appearance. Jennings, a senior from Franklin, Louisiana, will be entering his first season as the undisputed starting quarterback for the Mustangs, now competing in the ACC. Vannini anticipates Jennings will benefit from having full control of the offense. This mock draft round underscores the increasing importance of quarterback play in college football and the potential for unexpected stars to emerge. The upcoming season will reveal whether these analysts’ predictions hold true

David Pollack Names College Football Playoff Team that Could Regress in 2025

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor July 13, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

SMU Mustangs Face Potential Setback After Playoff Debut

After a notable debut season in a new conference, can the SMU Mustangs maintain their momentum? One college football analyst suggests they might face challenges in the upcoming year.

Analyst’s Concerns

College football analyst David Pollack has voiced concerns about Southern Methodist University’s (SMU) prospects for the upcoming season. On “See Ball, Get Ball with David Pollack,” he speculated that the Mustangs might struggle to replicate their success after finishing with an 11-3 record last year.

Pollack stated, “They just walked in and said, ‘This wasn’t that bad, This ain’t that hard,’ [They] had a chance to beat Clemson late, too. They didn’t show up in the first half, and that’s their fault. I would think more, the defensive side of the football, that regression, I think, happens a little bit. Then maybe a little bit on offense, and maybe you’re not nearly as good as you were.”

Notably, in 2024, four teams—the Oregon Ducks, Texas Longhorns, SMU Mustangs, and Arizona State Sun Devils—all reached the College Football Playoff in their first year in a new conference. The pressure is on to prove it wasn’t a fluke.

Challenges Ahead

SMU faces considerable challenges, ranking No. 78 in returning production, with only 53% of their previous season’s output returning. One bright spot is quarterback Kevin Jennings.

Despite his overall success, Jennings likely wants to forget his last performance: 195 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in a 38-10 loss to Penn State in the first round of the College Football Playoff. He completed just 55.6% of his passes in that game.

FPI Prediction

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) views the Mustangs favorably, ranking them the No. 3 team in the ACC, behind Miami and Clemson. However, FPI predicts a slight regression, forecasting an 8-4 record. The FPI gives SMU a 10.8% chance of winning the conference and a 21.1% chance of returning to the playoffs.

For comparison, the University of Georgia has the highest chance of winning the national championship in the 2024-25 season, with a 16.4% probability according to ESPN’s FPI (ESPN).

SMU will begin their season at home against the East Texas A&M Lions at 9 p.m. ET on August 30.
