Austin’s urban forest is finding new life thru Harvest Lumber Co., a company dedicated to repurposing salvaged wood into beautiful adn functional materials. Co-founder Kris Burns leads teh initiative, which transforms trees felled by weather or development, as well as reclaimed wood from demolition and renovation projects, into lumber and custom-built furniture.
The company’s impact is visible throughout Austin. Patrons of the Italian restaurant L’Oca d’Oro can admire a chef’s counter crafted from reclaimed pecan. Along the Lady Bird Lake boardwalk, 20 benches made from salvaged post oak and live oak showcase the company’s commitment to local sourcing. Even the exterior of Malin, the troll statue at Pease Park, features custom-milled Douglas fir recovered from the J.J. Pickle Research Campus.
“We hope to inspire consumers and designers to think local for wood projects ranging from furniture to art, either DIY or custom-made by us,” Burns stated. “Everyone who visits our showroom is amazed by all of the beautiful slabs and lumber we have, and are even more blown away when they’re told it’s all sourced from Austin.”
