Gaza Braces โfor โHumanitarian โCrisisโ as Winter Rains Flood Displaced Persons Camps
Gaza – Heavy winter rains are โขexacerbating the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza,โค leaving thousands of displaced families exposed and vulnerable, โฃas aid โคdeliveriesโ remain restricted despiteโฃ a truce agreement. The onset of rainfall has overwhelmed makeshift shelters, turning camps โinto pools ofโ contaminated water and raising fears of disease outbreaks.
Approximately 13,000 displaced families are currently living in tents that are succumbing toโค the elements. In Gaza City’s โSheikh Radwan neighborhood, a rainwater collection โpond has become a โhazardous confluence of rainfall, sewage, and garbage, posing an immediate threat to nearbyโค residents. “This pond is today a time bomb for residents,” warned Hosni Muhanna, spokesman for the Gazaโฃ City Municipality,in a recent broadcast onโ France 24. “If the pond overflows, the surrounding areas could face sewage overflow.”
Residents report widespread flooding.”Most of the tentsโข have been submerged under water โor flooded,” Suleiman al Sirswai, a displaced Gaza City resident, โtold Al Jazeera. โ”You don’t know what to do to โhelp yourself or toโข help those aroundโ you.”
The โฃcrisis is compounded by ongoing humanitarian restrictions imposed by โคisraeli authorities, hindering theโค delivery of essential supplies. UN spokesman Stรฉphane Dujarric lamented on Friday that โฃ”thousands of families areโค totally exposed toโ the โharsh conditions of winter” while “millions of products linked to shelter and urgently needed remain โstranded in Jordan,โ Egypt or โฃIsrael, awaiting approval to enter Gaza.” โฃ Specifically, equipmentโค neededโ to drain โwater from tents and contaminated areas is being held up.
The situation echoes the devastating winter of 2023-2024, during which the UN recorded the deaths of eight newbornsโ from cold in December.โ โฃFurther deathsโค were reported in February, with theโ Patient’s Friends โCharitable Hospital in Gaza City citing the deaths of six more infants within โdays, attributedโ to hypothermia and the inability of families to provide adequate warmth. Aid โworkers, speaking anonymously, estimate that around 20 babies orโค toddlers died from the cold last winter, โคsome just one or two daysโข old.
Meanwhile, in the West โBank, violence โคcontinues. Settlers reportedlyโ set fire to a house and two โcars in Sair, north of Hebron, injuring several people. Palestinian press agency Wafa reported that Israeli security and military forces prevented ambulances and fire โขtrucks from โคreaching the scene.
October saw at least 264 โคattacks against Palestinians, โขaccording to OCHA, marking โthe worstโฃ month forโ suchโข incidents as the UN began โขrecording them in 2006, coinciding with the olive harvest.
