Montreal โขArtist โฃDavid Altmejd to Exhibit Newโ Work โin Home City After Years Abroad
Montreal-born sculptor David Altmejd is preparing for โฃan exhibition at theโ Bradley Ertaskiran gallery inโค May, marking a potential return to his artistic roots after โคtwo decades primarily based โขin New York and,โฃ more recently, Los Angeles. The show will be held in the galleryS unique underground space, dubbed “the bunker,” and will feature a โnew body โฃof โคwork from the artist โขknown for his fantastical and often โunsettling creations.
Altmejd, whoโฃ left Montreal for New York in 1999 to attend Columbia University, has achieved significant success in the art world, but remains somewhat rootless, having spent the last fewโ years in Los Angeles and recently completing a project in Finland.โข His sculptures,โค often described as โฃcreatures of instinct, frequently โคfeature fragmentedโ human forms and exploreโฃ themes of โidentity and transformation. A recent work, The Comets, depicted in a video at the UQAM gallery, features three faces of a bearded manโ with threeโ sets of hands and a โthird eye. The artist described a process of building and โthen dismantling โelements of the sculpture, stating, “It’s as โคif the hats had created a newโข type of energy in theโค pieceโฆWhen โthatโ energy came in the work, the hats were โnot necessary.I took them off.”
Altmejd’sโ current exhibition,โข Agora, continues at the Galerie โคde l’UQAM until January 24.
