Bronx Residents Demand Faster Bus Service with Exclusive Lines

Bronx Residents Demand Faster Bus Service with Exclusive Lines

José uses the line 12 bus daily, he takes it at the Fordham Road and Webster Avenue stop. Waiting for the bus or until you reach your destination less than two miles away requires patience, although José says it’s an ordeal.

“Sometimes one is late waiting for the bus, the bus does not arrive on time, sometimes the bus takes about 20 minutes to arrive,” said José.

But José is not the only one who suffers from the slowness of the buses.

More than 85,000 people who use this means of transportation in the Bronx lose time, because in this county the exclusive lines for buses are almost non-existent. For this reason, today several users and activists raised their voices to demand that the authorities take them into account.

“Mayor Adams promised riders of the slowest buses across America that he would do whatever it takes to speed up travel, but he hasn’t delivered,” said Darrick Holmes of the Riders Alliance.

The implementation of the exclusive bus lines has been the most important transformation for these public transport vehicles to circulate quickly, however, according to the protesters, priority has been given to Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, except for The Bronx.

“Many of the people in The Bronx use the Bx 12 bus line, which is the one that comes from Fordham and goes to Manhattan, there are around 85 thousand people who use it and we want him to fulfill his promise to paint a specific line of buses on Fordham Road,” said Mayra Aldas, also from Riders Alliance.

For the young Sergio Cruz, getting to the university on time is important, but for that he must leave home or work with a lot of extra time since line 12 travels at less than 4 miles per hour.

“There is too much traffic and you have to wait so long, it would be better if we had a place where only the buses can go, like there in Manhattan, they quickly have it there, but here in the Bronx nothing,” Cruz said.

“Our goal as MTA drivers is to move riders as quickly as possible, so I’m here to support the construction of dedicated lines,” said Shanifah Rieara, MTA bus operator.

Airports in Our Area Experience Cancellations and Delays Due to East Coast Weather

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 30, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Airports in our area are facing numerous cancellations and delays due to bad weather on the East Coast.

The total number of delays reported today throughout the country already exceeds 11,000 flights and more than a thousand have been cancelled.

This Wednesday, the airports in our area report an improvement, although more than 150 flights have been canceled so far this morning.

More than 400 cancellations and hundreds of delays were reported at the Newark airport on Tuesday.

If you plan to travel before the weekend, you must confirm with your airline.

The Federal Aviation Administration had already warned that the shortage of air traffic controllers could also contribute to flight delays this summer season.

These are the delays registered at about 10:30 in the morning this Wednesday.

JFK:

Total arrears at John F Kennedy Intl: 192

Total cancellations at John F Kennedy Intl: 89

Total delays at LaGuardia: 65

Total cancellations at LaGuardia: 141

NEWARK

Total delays at Newark Liberty Intl: 116

Total cancellations at Newark Liberty Intl: 149

The Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, to whose department the FAA depends, has been crushing the airlines for more than a year. He has accused them of failing to meet reasonable standards of customer service and has suggested that they book more flights than they can handle.

The airlines fight back.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby blamed a shortage of federal air traffic controllers for last weekend’s massive disturbances at its Newark hub.

“We estimate that more than 150,000 United customers were affected this weekend by issues with FAA personnel and their ability to manage traffic,” Kirby wrote in a memo to employees Tuesday night.

As of early morning, nearly 1,300 flights had been delayed in the United States, according to FlightAware. Cancellations were close to 700 flights.

Cancellations and delays were most severe on the East Coast in the early hours and were rapidly getting worse. The disturbances are expected to spread to the West.

The delays are compounded by thunderstorms that swept through the Northeast on Tuesday. At various times, the Federal Aviation Administration held up flights to New York’s LaGuardia airport and Reagan Washington National and Baltimore-Washington airports near the nation’s capital.

About 6,500 flights were delayed Tuesday and about 1,900 canceled on the East Coast. United Airlines, with a major hub in Newark, New Jersey, canceled about 500 flights or 18% of its schedule, and JetBlue canceled 16% of its flights, according to FlightAware.

It is the storm that precedes the storm.

Travel has risen steadily every year since bottoming out during the pandemic and on Tuesday, the number of people who flew neared 2.4 million, up 11% from last year on the same day, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

Travel is expected to peak on Thursday, with more than 52,500 flights in total, likely the busiest day ever

Tragic Death of 14-Year-Old Boy in Queens Subway Accident

A 14-year-old boy died after falling from a subway car in Queens on Thursday, according to police reports.

According to police, the teen fell from a 7 train in the vicinity of Queens Boulevard and 33rd Street just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The teenager fell onto a footbridge to the side of the train located on elevated tracks in the open air, according to police.

Police had initially said the incident was allegedly another case of so-called subway surfing, but later said the circumstances of the incident were unclear, and they could not say exactly where the teenager fell from.

The teen was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Queens in critical condition but was pronounced dead hours later, according to the New York police.

Last week another young man died trying to do ‘subway surfing’.
